Knowing About and Knowing From

The description may be profound.

Yet the description is not itself painful.

Language does not manufacture significance.

It gives significance increasingly sophisticated forms.

The Direction of Development

The relationship between existential and semantic significance can therefore be expressed as a developmental progression:

The world matters.

The organism experiences that mattering.

Language construes that experience.

Meaning systems expand the possibilities of interpretation.

This is not a simple linear process.

Once language emerges, it begins to reshape experience itself.

New meanings create new ways of noticing.

The two forms of significance become intertwined.

The Challenge for Artificial Systems

Human beings routinely discuss events never witnessed.

We reconstruct ancient civilisations.

None of this requires immediate experience.

The symbolic organisation survives independently of the original circumstances from which it emerged.

Indeed, much of civilisation depends upon this remarkable capacity.

Knowledge accumulates because meanings become transportable.

Ideas outlive individuals.

Cultures preserve understandings across generations.

Language becomes humanity's great architecture of inherited meaning.

Semantic Significance Is Real

At this point an important clarification becomes necessary.

To distinguish semantic significance from existential significance is not to diminish it.

Semantic significance is not a pale imitation of lived experience.

It is a genuine form of organisation.

Scientific theories possess semantic significance.

Legal systems possess semantic significance.

Mathematics possesses semantic significance.

Literature possesses semantic significance.

Indeed, entire civilisations are organised through systems of semantic significance.

These symbolic structures shape institutions, traditions, identities and cultures.

Meaning changes history.

It influences action.

It transforms societies.

Semantic significance therefore possesses extraordinary causal power.

It is neither imaginary nor secondary.

It is one of humanity's greatest achievements.

Halliday's Quiet Revolution

Perhaps Halliday's deepest contribution lies here.

Language is often treated as a tool for expressing thought.

Halliday invited us to reverse the relationship.

Language does not merely express thought.

It participates in creating the forms of thought available to us.

But we cannot even formulate that question properly until we first appreciate the remarkable complexity of semantic significance itself.
