The Senior Common Room had acquired a new map.
This was not unusual.
The college possessed maps of the grounds, maps of the buildings, maps of the library system, and, according to Professor Quillibrace, far too many maps of committees.
"It is a very useful map," said Mr Blottisham.
Professor Quillibrace looked at it.
"It appears accurate."
"Yes."
"It appears detailed."
"Yes."
"It appears useful."
"Yes."
"Then why are you looking suspicious?"
Professor Quillibrace folded his arms.
"Because the most dangerous maps are often the useful ones."
Blottisham looked confused.
"Why?"
"Because we begin to trust them."
Miss Stray entered carrying tea.
"Are we discussing cartography?"
"Not exactly."
"Something more troublesome?"
"Much more."
Blottisham pointed at the map.
"We were discussing how useful it is."
"Yes."
"And Professor Quillibrace has decided that usefulness is dangerous."
"Not usefulness."
"No?"
"Forgetting what something is."
Miss Stray looked at the map.
"A map."
"Yes."
"Not the territory."
"Exactly."
Blottisham nodded.
"Everyone knows that."
"Do they?"
The room became quiet.
Professor Quillibrace walked to the blackboard.
He wrote:
THE MAP IS NOT THE TERRITORY
"A famous observation."
"Yes."
"Usually applied to maps."
"Yes."
"But the problem is much broader."
"How?"
"Human beings create maps constantly."
"Of places?"
"Of everything."
He wrote:
REALITY → MODEL → UNDERSTANDING
"We cannot encounter the world without organising it."
"Yes."
"We create categories."
"Yes."
"We create concepts."
"Yes."
"We create theories."
"Yes."
"These are maps."
Blottisham looked around.
"So science is a map?"
"Yes."
"Language is a map?"
"Yes."
"Categories are maps?"
"Yes."
"Then what is the problem?"
Professor Quillibrace smiled.
"The problem begins when we forget they are maps."
Miss Stray nodded.
"A useful distinction."
"A map is valuable because it simplifies."
"Yes."
"It leaves things out."
"Yes."
"It highlights what matters for a particular purpose."
"Yes."
"But if we mistake the map for the territory..."
"We assume the omissions do not exist."
Blottisham looked thoughtful.
"So the danger is not having a map."
"No."
"The danger is believing the map contains everything."
"Precisely."
Professor Quillibrace wrote:

Blottisham looked at it.
"That is a common phrase."
"Yes."
"People talk about fixing the economy."
"Yes."
"Repairing it."
"Yes."
"Keeping it running."
"Yes."
"And what image appears?"
"A machine."
"Exactly."
Miss Stray poured tea.
"And this metaphor has been enormously useful."
"Yes."
"It encourages us to think about mechanisms, inputs, outputs, and consequences."
"But?"
"But machines have designers."
"Yes."
"They have components."
"Yes."
"They have predictable functions."
"Yes."
"And human societies?"
Blottisham paused.
"Are not machines."
"Precisely."
The room was quiet.
"But perhaps another metaphor appears."
Miss Stray said:
THE ECONOMY IS AN ORGANISM
Blottisham looked at it.
"That sounds very different."
"Yes."
"Now the economy can grow."
"Yes."
"Adapt."
"Yes."
"Become healthy or unhealthy."
"Yes."
"But organisms also have their own problems."
Professor Quillibrace added.
"They suggest natural processes."
"Yes."
"Something that develops rather than something that is designed."
"So one metaphor says the economy is built."
"Yes."
"Another says it grows."
"Yes."
"Which one is correct?"
Professor Quillibrace smiled.
"That is the wrong question."
"The wrong question?"
"The better question is:
What does each metaphor allow us to see?
And what does each hide?"
Blottisham nodded slowly.
"The machine metaphor highlights structure."
"Yes."
"The organism metaphor highlights adaptation."
"Yes."
"But each makes some things easier to notice and others harder."
"Exactly."
Miss Stray looked at the board.
"Perhaps metaphors are like rooms."
"Rooms?"
"Yes."
"When we enter one room, some things are visible."
"Yes."
"Other things disappear behind the walls."
Professor Quillibrace nodded.
"An excellent image."
Blottisham looked pleased.
"I have a question."
"Naturally."
"Is the room metaphor itself a metaphor?"
A pause.
Professor Quillibrace looked at Miss Stray.
Miss Stray looked at Professor Quillibrace.
"Unfortunately," said Quillibrace,
"you are learning."
The discussion continued.
"Can this happen in science too?" Blottisham asked.
"Constantly."
"Like particles?"
"Yes."
"Fields?"
"Yes."
"Time flowing?"
"Yes."
"Then scientific progress is not just discovering new facts."
"No."
"It is also discovering better maps."
"Precisely."
"And sometimes discovering that the old map was not the territory."
"Exactly."
Blottisham looked again at the college map.
"Would you say this map is wrong?"
"No."
"Would you say it is true?"
Professor Quillibrace paused.
"It is true for certain purposes."
"Meaning?"
"It tells you how to navigate the grounds."
"Yes."
"But it does not tell you what it feels like to walk through them."
Miss Stray smiled.
"Or what memories people have of the places."
"Or what happens there."
"Or what the place means."
"The map is not false."
"No."
"It is incomplete."
"Precisely."
The clock struck five.
As they prepared to leave, Blottisham stopped.
"So what should we do?"
"About maps?"
"About all maps."
Professor Quillibrace picked up his coat.
"Use them."
"Yes?"
"Question them."
"Yes?"
"And remember that they are maps."
Miss Stray switched off the light.
"Perhaps wisdom is not having no maps."
"No?"
"But knowing when you are looking at one."
The room darkened.
The map remained on the table.
Useful.
Accurate.
Necessary.
But still only a map.
