I. Unpacking Consciousness: III. Unpacking Consciousness

So far, we have argued that language performs an extraordinary achievement.

It compresses the richness of experience into concepts that can be investigated.

Science depends upon this ability.

Without it, knowledge could scarcely accumulate.

The question is not whether such conceptual packing is valuable.

It unquestionably is.

The question is what happens when we occasionally reverse the process.

What happens when we unpack a concept?


To unpack a concept is not to reject it.

It is to ask what has been gathered together inside it.

Imagine someone using the word forest.

The word is wonderfully useful.

It allows us to think about an immense ecological system as though it were a single thing.

Yet the moment we enter the forest, the apparent simplicity dissolves.

There are trees.

Fungi.

Insects.

Birds.

Streams.

Changing light.

Predators.

Decay.

Growth.

Relationships in every direction.

The forest was never merely an object.

It was always an organised pattern of countless interacting processes.

The word simply allowed us to hold that complexity in our minds.


Concepts often work in this way.

They are not false.

They are compressed.

They gather together patterns that would otherwise overwhelm us.

The danger begins only when we forget that the compression has taken place.

When the concept becomes so familiar that we imagine it names a simple thing rather than an organised complexity.


Consciousness may be one of the most compressed concepts we possess.

It appears to refer to a single phenomenon.

Yet beneath the word lies an extraordinary variety of experiences and activities.

Attending.

Remembering.

Anticipating.

Feeling.

Imagining.

Perceiving.

Acting.

Monitoring.

Responding.

Organising.

Experiencing the passage of time.

Maintaining a sense of self.

Remaining open to the surrounding world.

The list could continue almost indefinitely.

The noun consciousness quietly gathers all of this together.

It is a remarkable act of conceptual economy.


Notice what happens once we begin unpacking.

The question,

What is consciousness?

begins to loosen.

Instead, many smaller questions emerge.

How does an organism organise its experience?

How does it integrate information arriving from different sources?

How does it maintain continuity across time?

How does it distinguish itself from its surroundings?

How does it monitor its own activity?

How does it anticipate what comes next?

These are not replacements for the original question.

They are the rich landscape that the original question had compressed.


Something else changes too.

We begin speaking less about consciousness and more about conscious activity.

The difference may appear slight.

It is not.

The first expression suggests possession.

The second suggests organisation.

One points towards an entity.

The other towards an ongoing way of functioning.

That shift does not solve the mystery.

But it changes the direction in which we search for an explanation.


Perhaps this is true of many scientific concepts.

When we unpack life, we discover metabolism, reproduction, adaptation and evolution.

When we unpack language, we discover speaking, listening, interpreting, remembering and creating meaning.

When we unpack society, we discover relationships rather than a single object called society.

None of these unpackings makes the concept disappear.

Instead, the concept becomes richer.

Its apparent simplicity gives way to organised complexity.


The same may prove true of consciousness.

Perhaps consciousness is not one thing waiting to be found.

Perhaps it is a convenient way of speaking about a remarkable organisation of many ongoing activities.

If so, asking whether something "has consciousness" may resemble asking whether a forest "has forestness."

The question is grammatically understandable.

Yet it may conceal the very organisation we hope to understand.


This does not mean consciousness is an illusion.

Nor does it mean that subjective experience is unreal.

Quite the opposite.

It suggests that our experience may be even richer than the noun allows us to see.

By unpacking the concept, we recover some of the movement that the compression necessarily left in the background.

We begin to notice that what once appeared to be a static object may instead be an organised pattern of continuous activity.


That possibility does not tell us how consciousness works.

It does not answer the neuroscientist.

It does not settle debates about artificial intelligence.

It does something quieter.

It reminds us that before we ask how consciousness arises, we should understand how the concept itself arose.

Sometimes the most illuminating discoveries occur not by inventing new ideas, but by carefully unpacking ideas that have become so familiar we no longer notice how much they contain.

Perhaps consciousness is one of them.

I. Unpacking Consciousness: II. Packing Experience

In the previous essay, we noticed something that usually escapes attention.

When we speak about consciousness, we are no longer simply describing experience.

We are speaking about a concept that has already packaged experience into a form that can be discussed, compared and investigated.

That observation raises another question.

Why does language do this at all?

The answer is surprisingly simple.

Because without such packaging, science would scarcely be possible.


Imagine trying to study movement if every sentence had to describe every individual motion.

Imagine trying to understand evolution if we could never speak of evolution.

Imagine trying to investigate learning if we were forbidden to use the word learning.

Knowledge would never accumulate.

Every observation would remain trapped in the uniqueness of the moment.

Language solves this problem by performing an extraordinary act of compression.

It gathers countless experiences into concepts.

Those concepts can then become the subjects of further thought.


This is one of the great achievements of human language.

Experience unfolds as continuous activity.

Language allows us to pause that activity just long enough to think about it.

We speak of memory.

Attention.

Gravity.

Evolution.

Intelligence.

Consciousness.

Each word gathers together an immense landscape of experience into something that can be held in the mind.

Without this ability, scientific civilisation would look very different.

Perhaps it could not exist at all.


Compression, however, is never free.

Think about a map.

A map allows us to navigate a landscape because it leaves almost everything out.

It omits the smell of the forest.

The sound of the river.

The texture of the rocks.

The changing light.

None of these omissions makes the map defective.

They make it useful.

Yet we would be making a serious mistake if we confused the map with the landscape itself.

Concepts work in much the same way.


The more successful a concept becomes, the easier it is to forget that it is a conceptual map.

Eventually, the concept feels more real than the experience from which it arose.

This is not a failure of science.

It is almost an inevitable consequence of scientific success.

The concept becomes so familiar that its origins disappear from view.

We cease to notice that it was ever constructed.


Consciousness may be a particularly striking example.

The word feels so natural that we rarely stop to ask what it has gathered together.

Awareness.

Perception.

Memory.

Expectation.

Attention.

Emotion.

The sense of self.

The experience of time.

The organisation of action.

The relation between organism and world.

All of these, and more, quietly disappear behind a single noun.

The compression is astonishing.

So astonishing, in fact, that we begin treating the compressed concept as though it were simpler than the living processes it represents.


The temptation then is obvious.

If consciousness is now a thing, we naturally ask where it is.

How much of it there is.

Whether another organism has it.

Whether a machine could possess it.

The grammar has not answered these questions.

But it has quietly shaped the kinds of answers that seem possible.


None of this means that concepts should be abandoned.

Quite the opposite.

Concepts are among the greatest tools humanity has ever invented.

The question is not whether we should use them.

It is whether we occasionally remember to unpack them.

To ask what experiences, activities and relationships have been gathered together inside a word that now feels perfectly ordinary.


Philosophy has often been described as the search for clearer definitions.

Perhaps it also performs another task.

Perhaps it periodically reminds us that our clearest concepts were once attempts to organise the untidy richness of experience.

Not to undermine those concepts.

But to understand both their power and their limits.

Science depends upon packing experience.

Philosophy sometimes depends upon unpacking it.

Neither activity is complete without the other.


The mystery of consciousness, then, may not begin in the brain.

Nor in artificial intelligence.

Nor even in philosophy.

It may begin much earlier.

It may begin in the remarkable human ability to compress the flowing complexity of experience into a concept that seems stable enough to investigate.

That achievement has made the modern science of consciousness possible.

It may also have quietly shaped the questions we believe consciousness research ought to ask.

Before deciding whether those questions are sufficient, it is worth understanding how they first came into being.

I. Unpacking Consciousness: I. The Grammar of Consciousness

Most discussions of consciousness begin with a familiar question.

What is consciousness?

Neuroscientists ask it.

Philosophers ask it.

Artificial intelligence researchers ask it.

Increasingly, the public asks it too.

The question feels perfectly natural.

So natural, in fact, that we rarely stop to examine it.

But perhaps we should.

Not because the question is wrong.

Because we have already made an important assumption before asking it.

The assumption is hidden in the grammar.


Consider two simple sentences.

She is conscious.

She has consciousness.

At first glance, they appear to say almost the same thing.

But they do something rather different.

The first describes a state.

The second introduces something that can apparently be possessed.

Without noticing, we have moved from an adjective describing experience to a noun describing what appears to be an entity.

The transition is effortless.

It is also philosophically significant.


Language performs this kind of transformation all the time.

We begin with people interacting.

Soon we speak of relationships.

We begin with things changing.

Soon we speak of change.

We begin with people deciding.

Soon we speak of decision-making.

Processes become concepts.

Activities become objects of thought.

This ability is one of language's greatest strengths.

Without it, much of science would be impossible.

How could we investigate evolution without speaking of evolution?

How could we study communication without speaking of communication?

How could we compare different kinds of memory without first treating memory as something we can discuss?

Language allows us to compress rich patterns of experience into concepts that can be analysed, compared and developed.

Scientific thought depends upon this extraordinary achievement.


But every compression has consequences.

When experience is packaged into a concept, some aspects become easier to examine.

Others quietly fade into the background.

Movement becomes stability.

Activity becomes entity.

Relation becomes object.

The concept becomes so useful that we gradually forget it was ever a way of organising experience.

It begins to feel like the experience itself.


This matters because consciousness may be one of the concepts most affected by this process.

When we ask,

What is consciousness?

the grammar quietly encourages us to imagine consciousness as something that exists independently, waiting to be discovered, measured or possessed.

Soon other questions follow naturally.

Can animals have consciousness?

Can machines have consciousness?

How much consciousness does an infant possess?

Can consciousness be transferred?

Can consciousness survive death?

Notice that none of these questions is unreasonable.

Yet every one of them assumes that consciousness is the kind of thing that can be had.

Before neuroscience begins.

Before philosophy begins.

Before artificial intelligence enters the discussion.

The grammar has already suggested an ontology.


None of this means the grammar is mistaken.

On the contrary, it has served us remarkably well.

Science advances by creating stable concepts.

Concepts allow us to classify, compare, measure and explain.

Without them, knowledge could scarcely accumulate.

The point is not to abandon such concepts.

It is simply to remember that they are ways of construing experience rather than transparent windows onto reality.


Perhaps philosophy has a distinctive role here.

Science often compresses experience into concepts so that investigation becomes possible.

Philosophy can occasionally unpack those concepts, not to reject them, but to recover the richness of the experience from which they arose.

Sometimes, by unpacking a familiar concept, we discover that the questions we have been asking are not the only questions available to us.

Sometimes we discover that the grammar has been guiding our imagination all along.


This series is an invitation to perform that unpacking.

Not because consciousness is "only" a word.

Nor because language determines reality.

Rather, because every investigation begins with the ways in which experience has first been organised into language.

Before we ask whether consciousness exists in brains, animals or machines, it may be worth asking a quieter question.

How did consciousness become the kind of thing we imagine could be possessed at all?

That question does not answer the mystery of consciousness.

But it may help us understand why the mystery has taken the particular shape that it has.

And sometimes, understanding the shape of a question is the first step towards asking a better one.
