The Senior Common Room Discusses Possibility Or: The Curious Case of Things That Do Not Yet Exist

Several days had passed since the Senior Common Room had settled, at least to its own satisfaction, the nature of football, Scrabble and intelligence.

Mr Blottisham was therefore feeling uneasy.

"I think we've overlooked something."

Professor Quillibrace looked up.

"Almost certainly."


"We keep talking about possibilities."

"Yes."

"But..."

Blottisham hesitated.

"...what are they?"

Professor Quillibrace slowly closed his book.

Miss Stray smiled.

"I was wondering how long it would take."


Blottisham looked relieved.

"So you don't know either."

"Oh, I have opinions."

"Is that the same thing?"

"Frequently not."


Miss Stray stirred her tea.

"When we say a footballer creates a possibility..."

"Yes?"

"...where is that possibility?"

Blottisham looked around the room.

"I don't see one."

"No."

"So where is it?"

Professor Quillibrace leaned back.

"A most inconvenient question."


"It can't be in the future," said Blottisham.

"Why not?"

"Because the future hasn't happened."

"Reasonable."

"And it can't be here."

"Why not?"

"Because if it were here..."

he looked under the newspaper,

"...we'd keep stepping on it."


Miss Stray laughed.

"So possibilities don't seem to occupy space."

"No."

"They don't weigh anything."

"No."

"They aren't visible."

"No."

"And yet footballers seem to respond to them."

"Exactly."


Blottisham frowned.

"That seems rather suspicious."

"In what way?"

"We appear to be talking about something that doesn't exist."

Quillibrace nodded.

"Many important discussions begin that way."


There was a thoughtful silence.

Finally Miss Stray spoke.

"Perhaps a possibility is not a thing."

"No?"

"Perhaps it is a relationship."

Professor Quillibrace looked interested.

"Go on."


"The empty space behind a defender..."

"Yes."

"...isn't itself the possibility."

"No."

"It becomes a possibility because of the positions of the players."

Quillibrace nodded.

"Excellent."


"The same with chess."

"Indeed."

"A bishop isn't dangerous because bishops possess danger."

"No."

"It's dangerous because of how everything else is arranged."


"And letters?"

"Likewise."

"The letter E isn't useful."

"No."

"It becomes useful because of the other letters beside it."


Blottisham looked puzzled.

"So..."

he said slowly,

"...possibilities aren't things waiting to happen."

"No."

"They emerge from relationships."


Professor Quillibrace smiled.

"I believe you have just rescued us from a very common mistake."


"What mistake?"

"The idea that reality consists of objects first..."

"...and relationships afterwards."

Miss Stray nodded.

"But perhaps relationships come first."


Blottisham looked alarmed.

"So the world isn't made of things?"

"I didn't say that."

"But..."

"It may be that what things can become depends more fundamentally upon their relationships than upon their isolated existence."


There was another silence.

Rain had begun again.


Blottisham looked out of the window.

"I've always imagined the future as lots of little roads."

"So have most people."

"But perhaps..."

he hesitated,

"...the roads don't exist until we begin walking."

Nobody spoke.


Miss Stray broke the silence.

"That would explain why genuine creativity always surprises us."

"How so?" asked Quillibrace.

"Because it doesn't choose one of the available roads."

"It makes a new one."


Professor Quillibrace smiled.

"My dear Miss Stray..."

he said quietly,

"...I suspect you have just explained why discovery feels different from selection."


Blottisham looked thoughtful.

"So perhaps possibilities aren't hidden objects waiting in the future."

"No."

"They're patterns waiting to emerge."

Quillibrace considered this.

"I should object."

"But?"

"I find myself unable."


The college clock struck five.

Books were gathered.

Tea cups emptied.

Mr Blottisham stood.

"I think I've learned something."

"What?"

"I've spent most of my life imagining that reality is made of things."

Professor Quillibrace put on his coat.

"And now?"

Blottisham smiled.

"I'm beginning to suspect it is made of conversations."

Miss Stray looked from one to the other.

"Conversations?"

"Between people?"

"No."

"Between possibilities."


Professor Quillibrace paused at the door.

"My dear Blottisham..."

he said,

"...that is either complete nonsense..."

"...or the beginning of a very interesting philosophy."

He opened the door.

"As always..."

he added,

"...we shall need another pot of tea."

The Senior Common Room Discusses Intelligence Or: The Art of Keeping Futures Alive

The Senior Common Room was unusually quiet.

Outside, rain drifted lazily across the college quadrangle. Inside, Professor Quillibrace appeared to be reading. Miss Stray appeared to be thinking. Mr Blottisham appeared to be doing both with equal determination.

Eventually he lowered his newspaper.

"I've been wondering."

Professor Quillibrace looked over his spectacles.

"How alarming."


"Yesterday," said Blottisham, "we decided football was really about possibilities."

"We observed that possibility was central to football."

"And Scrabble."

"Yes."

"And chess."

"Certainly."

Blottisham frowned.

"So what does that tell us about intelligence?"

Professor Quillibrace closed his book.

"An excellent question."

Miss Stray looked mildly surprised.

"You approve?"

"I approve of questions considerably more often than answers."


Blottisham leaned forward.

"I always thought intelligence meant solving problems."

"A common view."

"It doesn't?"

"It is incomplete."

Miss Stray looked towards the rain.

"Perhaps solving a problem is only the visible part."

"What lies beneath?" asked Blottisham.

"The ability to perceive possibilities that others cannot yet see."


Professor Quillibrace nodded.

"Consider two footballers."

"The fast one and the slow one?"

"No."

"The one with tattoos?"

"No."

"The one who keeps falling over?"

"No."

"The same footballer?"

Quillibrace ignored him.

"One player receives the ball and sees one pass."

"The obvious pass."

"Yes."

"The other sees five."

"But only plays one."

"Precisely."

"Because the others were wrong?"

"No."

"Because one preserves the richest future."


Blottisham looked thoughtful.

"So intelligence isn't seeing the answer."

"No."

"It's seeing the landscape."


Miss Stray smiled.

"The answer is just one path through it."


There was a pause.

Rain tapped gently against the windows.


Professor Quillibrace spoke almost to himself.

"I suspect this is why experts often appear calm."

"Because they know what will happen?"

"No."

"Because they know what could happen."


Blottisham considered this.

"So expertise isn't certainty."

"No."

"It's comfort with uncertainty."


Quillibrace nodded.

"The novice experiences uncertainty as the absence of knowledge."

"And the expert?"

"The expert experiences uncertainty as the presence of possibilities."


Miss Stray stirred her tea.

"That is rather beautiful."

"I wish it weren't."

"Why?"

"Because beautiful ideas are frequently misunderstood."


Blottisham frowned.

"I still don't quite see it."

Professor Quillibrace picked up a bishop from the old chess set that permanently occupied one corner of the room.

"What is this worth?"

"Three."

"In points."

"Yes."

"In reality?"

Blottisham shrugged.

"It depends."

"On what?"

"The position."

Quillibrace smiled.

"Exactly."


He placed the bishop on an empty board.

"It has not changed."

"No."

"But its value has."

"Because..."

"Because value is not contained in the piece."

Miss Stray finished the sentence.

"It exists in the possibilities surrounding it."


Professor Quillibrace placed the bishop back in the box.

"Everything interesting seems eventually to become relational."


Silence settled again.


After several minutes Miss Stray spoke quietly.

"I wonder whether this is why genuinely creative people often look as though they are doing very little."

Blottisham laughed.

"I've met quite a few academics like that."

Quillibrace decided not to respond.


"I mean," Miss Stray continued, "a composer."

"A composer?"

"They are not choosing notes."

"No."

"They are shaping what the next note can become."


"A novelist," she continued.

"Not choosing sentences."

"No."

"Shaping the future of the story."


"A scientist."

"Not merely explaining observations."

"No."

"Creating entirely new questions."

Professor Quillibrace smiled.

"Yes."


Blottisham looked around the room.

"So..."

he said carefully,

"...perhaps intelligence isn't about having the most knowledge."

"No."

"Or the quickest answers."

"No."

"Or even making the best decision."

Quillibrace shook his head.

"What then?"


The old professor looked towards the rain.

"When we are young," he said, "we imagine intelligence is the ability to choose correctly."

"And later?"

"We begin to suspect it is the ability to avoid choosing too early."


Miss Stray nodded slowly.

"To keep good futures alive."


Nobody spoke.

The rain continued.


At last Blottisham broke the silence.

"So the cleverest people aren't necessarily those who know the future."

"No."

"They're the ones who leave themselves able to meet whichever future arrives."

Professor Quillibrace looked quietly pleased.

"I think," he said,

"that may be the wisest thing you have ever said."

Blottisham beamed.

"I've been reading."

"We noticed."


He took another sip of tea.

"I wonder if universities encourage that sort of intelligence."

Professor Quillibrace laughed softly.

"I suspect universities are rather better at measuring answers than preserving possibilities."


Miss Stray looked out across the wet lawns.

"Perhaps education should not simply fill minds."

"No?"

"Perhaps it should enlarge the landscape in which minds can move."

Professor Quillibrace said nothing.

After a while he simply inclined his head.


The clock struck five.

Books were closed.

Cups were gathered.

Outside, the rain had almost stopped.

Mr Blottisham opened the door.

"Professor?"

"Yes?"

"If intelligence is about keeping futures alive..."

"Yes?"

"...does that mean we've been asking the wrong question?"

Professor Quillibrace smiled.

"My dear Blottisham..."

he said,

"...that is usually how a genuinely interesting answer begins."

The Senior Common Room Discusses Scrabble Or: The Curious Geometry of Seven Letters

The following afternoon the Senior Common Room found Mr Blottisham unusually pleased with himself.

This was generally regarded as an early warning sign.

"I have made a philosophical discovery," he announced.

Professor Quillibrace looked up from his book with the expression of a man who had heard this sentence before.

"Have you?"

"Yes."

Miss Stray smiled.

"What sort of discovery?"

"It concerns Scrabble."

"I see."

"I now understand that it is exactly like football."

Professor Quillibrace removed his spectacles.

"No."

"It is."

"No."

"It really is."

"No."

Mr Blottisham folded his arms.

"You haven't even heard the argument."

"I am merely attempting to reduce the amount of work required to reject it."


"I was playing online last night," Blottisham continued, "and I realised I was deliberately not playing my highest-scoring word."

Miss Stray looked interested.

"Why?"

"Because it left me with dreadful letters."

Professor Quillibrace slowly replaced his spectacles.

"Continue."

"I could have scored forty-one points."

"And?"

"I played a twenty-six-point word instead."

"You voluntarily scored fewer points?"

"Yes."

"Extraordinary."

"It left me with A, E, N, R and S."

Quillibrace nodded.

"A balanced rack."

"Exactly."

"You were preserving future opportunities."

"I was."

There was a pause.

"I dislike it when Mr Blottisham accidentally behaves like a strategist."


Miss Stray looked thoughtful.

"So the twenty-six-point move was actually the better move?"

"Precisely," said Quillibrace.

"The value of a move cannot always be measured by its immediate reward."

Blottisham looked delighted.

"That's what I said."

"You implied it."

"I implied it very enthusiastically."


Miss Stray reached for the biscuit tin.

"So every move changes two things."

"Indeed."

"What exists now..."

"...and what becomes possible next."

"So the letters are not simply letters."

"No."

"They are future words."

"Better."

"They are probabilities."

"Better still."

"They are possibilities waiting to become actual."

Professor Quillibrace looked faintly impressed.

"I shall overlook the poetic phrasing because, on this occasion, it is also correct."


Mr Blottisham looked puzzled.

"But why does this feel so different from ordinary board games?"

"Because," said Quillibrace, "most people think they are manipulating objects."

"But they aren't?"

"They are manipulating possibility spaces."

Blottisham frowned.

"I don't know what that means."

"No."

"Can you explain it without saying 'possibility space'?"

Quillibrace sighed.

"I shall try."


He picked up the sugar bowl.

"Suppose this is your rack."

"I have never received so much sugar in Scrabble."

"It is an illustration."

He arranged several sugar packets beside it.

"These represent future letters."

Miss Stray smiled.

"I suspect this demonstration is already drifting beyond the available evidence."

"Quite."

Quillibrace ignored her.

"When you play a word, you do not simply remove letters."

"You change what combinations become likely."

"Exactly."

"You alter the statistical shape of your future."

Blottisham looked thoughtful.

"So the game isn't really about words."

"No."

"It's about tomorrow."

Quillibrace stopped moving the sugar packets.

"That..."

he admitted,

"...is unexpectedly well put."


Miss Stray looked from one to the other.

"This sounds rather familiar."

"It should," said Quillibrace.

"It is exactly what we were discussing about football."

"The pass."

"The pass."

"The through ball."

"The through ball."

"The backwards pass."

"The misunderstood backwards pass."

Blottisham nodded vigorously.

"So my twenty-six-point word was the lexical equivalent of passing sideways."

"An astonishing sentence."

"But true?"

"Entirely."


Blottisham leaned back triumphantly.

"I knew football and spelling had something in common."

"You did not."

"I sensed it."

"You wandered into it."

"I arrived."

"You collided with it."


Miss Stray laughed.

"So perhaps chess, football and Scrabble all share the same hidden structure."

"They do," said Quillibrace.

"In each case, the novice asks,

'What is my best move now?'

The expert asks,

'What sort of future does this move create?'"


There was a thoughtful silence.

Finally Blottisham spoke.

"I wonder whether life is like that."

Professor Quillibrace looked over the rim of his teacup.

"I have been hoping someone would eventually ask."

"So life isn't about making the best decisions?"

"I doubt it."

"What then?"

"Perhaps it is about preserving the richest possibilities."

Miss Stray nodded slowly.

"Not trying to predict the future..."

"...but trying not to imprison it."


Blottisham stared into the fire.

"That sounds rather important."

"It probably is."

"Do universities teach this?"

Quillibrace laughed quietly.

"My dear Blottisham..."

he said,

"...universities spend a remarkable amount of time doing the opposite."


For several moments nobody spoke.

Then Blottisham brightened.

"I've got it!"

Quillibrace closed his eyes.

"What?"

"We should create a Centre for Applied Possibility Management."

"No."

"We could investigate future opportunities."

"No."

"We'd have strategic possibility officers."

"No."

"We could publish annual possibility reports."

"No."

"We'd rank departments according to their latent possibility index."

Professor Quillibrace rose slowly from his chair.

"I find," he observed, "that whenever Mr Blottisham discovers a genuinely profound idea, he immediately proposes turning it into an administrative unit."

Miss Stray smiled.

"Perhaps that, too, is a possibility."

Quillibrace sighed.

"Unfortunately."

The Senior Common Room Discusses the World Cup Or: The Metaphysics of the Through Ball

The Senior Common Room at St Anselm's College had gathered, as it often did, to discuss a matter which appeared trivial until someone had spent sufficient time thinking about it and had thereby transformed it into something either profound or unnecessarily complicated.

On this occasion, the subject was football.

"I must confess," said Professor Quillibrace, carefully aligning his teaspoon with the edge of his saucer, "that I find the usual descriptions of football intellectually unsatisfactory."

Mr Blottisham looked up from the newspaper.

"You mean the bit where they kick the ball into the net?"

"That is the conclusion of the game," replied Quillibrace. "Not the essence of it."

"Ah," said Blottisham. "One of those discussions where the thing everyone thinks is the thing turns out not to be the thing."

"Precisely."

Miss Stray smiled.

"Then what is the essence?"

Quillibrace considered this.

"Possibility."

There was a brief silence.

"Football," said Blottisham, "is about possibility?"

"Yes."

"I had assumed it was about football."

"It is possible," replied Quillibrace, "to be correct and still misunderstand the structure of a thing."


Miss Stray leaned forward.

"Explain."

"Every moment of a football match contains a range of possible futures. The player with the ball is not merely deciding where to kick it. They are altering the landscape of what can happen next."

Blottisham frowned.

"So a pass is not just a pass?"

"No more than a chess move is merely the movement of a piece."

"Chess pieces move differently."

"That is not the point."

"It is usually quite an important point in chess."

Professor Quillibrace ignored this.

"A player receiving the ball creates a temporary field of possibilities. They may pass, shoot, dribble, hold possession, draw defenders, switch play, or lose the ball. Each choice eliminates some futures and creates others."

"So the footballer is choosing the future?"

"No. That would be too simple. They are shaping the conditions under which future possibilities emerge."

Miss Stray nodded.

"Not selecting from a fixed set of options, but changing the set itself."

"Exactly."


Mr Blottisham looked suspicious.

"This sounds rather like saying a player who passes backwards has done something important."

"Sometimes," said Quillibrace.

"But they have moved the ball away from the goal."

"Yes."

"Then how is that progress?"

"Because the goal is not the only relevant measure. A backward pass may draw opponents forward, create space elsewhere, alter defensive positioning, and increase future attacking possibilities."

Blottisham considered this.

"So sometimes going backwards is going forwards."

"That is a crude formulation."

"But accurate?"

"Annoyingly so."

Miss Stray smiled.

"Perhaps this explains why experts often see things ordinary viewers do not. They are not merely watching what happens. They are watching what could happen."


Professor Quillibrace nodded.

"Exactly. A novice sees the player with the ball. An expert sees the relationships between all players: the spaces opening, the spaces closing, the movements that have not yet occurred but have become possible."

"That is almost acceptable."

"Almost?"

"I object only because it sounds like the title of a motivational seminar."

"Perhaps we should organise one."

"No."

"With a framework."

"No."

"A strategic possibility enhancement framework."

"Absolutely not."

"Quarterly possibility audits?"

Professor Quillibrace closed his eyes.

"This is precisely why I hesitate to discuss abstract concepts with administrators."


Later, as the tea was being cleared away, Miss Stray returned to the original question.

"Is football unique in this way?"

"No," said Quillibrace. "Many human activities share this structure."

"Chess?"

"Certainly. A chess move changes the future possibilities of the board."

"Writing?"

"Every sentence closes countless possible sentences while creating new ones."

"Science?"

"Every theory does the same. A good theory does not merely explain existing observations. It creates new possibilities for questions."

"So perhaps intelligence is not simply the ability to find answers."

Where Thinking Happens — X. Learning to Think Together

Every age leaves behind a characteristic image of intelligence.

The ancient world admired wisdom.

The Enlightenment celebrated reason.

The industrial age prized efficiency.

Our own age has become fascinated by information.

Each image has shaped not only what societies valued, but how they organised themselves.

Schools.

Universities.

Libraries.

Laboratories.

Governments.

All quietly embody assumptions about what intelligence is and how it grows.

If the argument developed throughout this series is correct, another transformation may now be beginning.

Not because machines have become human.

Nor because humans have become machines.

But because we are beginning to recognise that intelligence itself is profoundly relational.

That recognition carries consequences.

For centuries, education has often been imagined as the transfer of knowledge from those who possess it to those who lack it.

There is truth in this picture.

Knowledge can indeed be transmitted.

But relational intelligence suggests that the deeper purpose of education may be something else.

To cultivate relationships in which new understanding becomes possible.

A classroom is not merely a place where information changes hands.

At its best, it becomes an environment in which thinking emerges.

The same may be said of research.

Universities frequently celebrate individual achievement.

Appointments.

Awards.

Publications.

Prestige.

These things matter.

Yet scientific progress has always depended upon intellectual communities capable of questioning, refining and extending one another's work.

Knowledge advances because relationships advance.

The same principle extends far beyond academia.

Healthy organisations are not distinguished merely by employing talented individuals.

They cultivate conversations.

They create conditions in which disagreement remains productive, curiosity remains welcome and unexpected connections are allowed to flourish.

Such organisations often appear unusually creative.

Perhaps creativity is simply what relational intelligence looks like when institutions learn to support it.

Even democracy appears in a different light.

We often defend democratic institutions because they protect rights, distribute power or preserve liberty.

These are indispensable achievements.

Yet democracy also performs another function.

It creates structures through which societies can continue thinking together.

Public debate is not merely a mechanism for choosing leaders.

Ideally, it is a mechanism through which collective understanding continually renews itself.

When conversation collapses, democracy loses more than civility.

It loses one of its principal cognitive capacities.

Perhaps this explains why polarisation feels so intellectually exhausting.

Its greatest danger is not merely that people disagree.

Disagreement has always been essential to thought.

The danger is that relationships themselves begin to fail.

Once that happens, the conditions under which new understanding emerges begin to disappear.

Relational intelligence depends upon difference.

But it depends equally upon connection.

Neither alone is sufficient.

This observation also casts our relationship with artificial intelligence in a rather unexpected light.

The question is no longer whether machines will replace us.

It is whether we shall learn to build relationships—among ourselves and with our technologies—that enlarge rather than diminish our collective capacity for understanding.

Technology alone cannot answer that question.

It is ultimately a cultural question.

Perhaps even a moral one.

Every generation inherits the responsibility of designing the environments in which future minds will develop.

Until now, those environments consisted almost entirely of relationships among human beings and the intellectual traditions they created.

For the first time, they now include conversational systems capable of participating in inquiry.

Whether that participation enriches or impoverishes human thought will depend less upon the technology itself than upon the quality of the relationships we choose to cultivate.

That responsibility belongs to us.

Throughout this series I have suggested that intelligence is not simply something we possess.

It is something we participate in.

Perhaps that is the most important distinction of all.

For participation is never passive.

It asks something of us.

It asks us to listen carefully.

To question generously.

To disagree constructively.

To remain curious.

To welcome perspectives different from our own.

To recognise that understanding often emerges between minds rather than within them.

The future of intelligence, then, may not depend primarily upon building smarter machines.

Nor even upon producing smarter people.

It may depend upon learning, together, how to become better partners in the endless human adventure of thinking.

That would be a future worth cultivating.

Where Thinking Happens — IX. Relational Intelligence

Throughout this series, we have carefully avoided giving a name to the phenomenon we have been exploring.

That omission has become increasingly awkward.

Again and again we have encountered situations in which thought seems to arise not entirely within individual minds, but through relationships between them.

Conversations generate insights that neither participant possessed beforehand.

Scientific communities discover truths that no individual could have reached alone.

Creative collaborations produce works that cannot easily be attributed to a single imagination.

Even our newest conversational technologies sometimes become partners in forms of inquiry that neither human nor machine appears to sustain independently.

We have examined each of these cases from a different angle.

Yet we still lack a concept capable of holding them together.

Perhaps it is time to introduce one.

We shall call this phenomenon relational intelligence.

By this we do not mean intelligence that belongs to relationships as though relationships themselves were conscious minds.

That would be a much stronger claim, and one requiring far greater evidence.

Nor do we mean simply cooperation.

People have always cooperated.

Relational intelligence is something more specific.

It is the emergence of cognitive possibilities through sustained interaction between participants whose differences become intellectually productive.

The emphasis is important.

Not interaction alone.

Not intelligence alone.

But the relationship between them.

A productive relationship does not merely combine two sets of abilities.

It transforms them.

Each participant continually reshapes the possibilities available to the other.

Questions evolve.

Concepts mature.

Unexpected distinctions emerge.

The direction of inquiry becomes impossible to predict from either participant considered separately.

Thinking becomes relational.

This perspective helps explain why certain collaborations prove so extraordinarily creative.

Their success cannot be measured simply by examining the talents of the individuals involved.

History offers countless examples of brilliant people who achieved little together.

It also offers examples of partnerships in which seemingly ordinary individuals accomplished remarkable things.

The difference often lies in the quality of the relationship itself.

Some relationships amplify thought.

Others merely exchange information.

Relational intelligence belongs to the first category.

It is not a property that one participant possesses and another receives.

It is a pattern that emerges through reciprocal engagement.

The distinction may seem subtle.

We suspect it is profound.

It encourages us to ask entirely new questions.

Instead of asking whether one person is more intelligent than another, we may ask what kinds of relationships cultivate deeper understanding.

Instead of asking whether a machine is intelligent, we may ask whether particular forms of interaction expand the space of possible thought.

Instead of treating intelligence as an object to be measured, we begin treating it as a process to be nurtured.

This changes more than our vocabulary.

It changes our priorities.

If intelligence is relational, then education becomes less about transferring information and more about cultivating conversations.

One proposes an idea.

A third notices an unexpected implication.

The eventual discovery belongs to none of them in isolation.

This phenomenon appears so frequently that we scarcely notice how peculiar it is.

The relationship itself seems capable of producing intellectual behaviour that cannot easily be attributed to any single participant.

Complex systems often behave in this way.

A single neuron cannot think.

A single ant cannot build an anthill.

A single bird cannot produce the astonishing coordinated movements of a murmuration.

Yet organised relationships among many simple components generate remarkably sophisticated behaviour.

Scientists call such phenomena emergent.

The whole exhibits properties that are not apparent when examining the parts separately.

Perhaps thinking sometimes displays similar characteristics.

This is not to suggest that conversations possess consciousness.

Nor that research groups become giant minds.

Those claims would require far stronger arguments.

A more modest possibility is already intriguing enough.

Relationships may become places where certain forms of cognition occur.

Questions emerge.

Connections appear.

Errors are corrected.

Possibilities multiply.

None of these processes belongs entirely to any one participant.

They belong to the interaction.

This perspective also helps explain why some collaborations prove extraordinarily fruitful while others accomplish remarkably little.

Success depends not merely upon the intelligence of the participants.

It depends upon the quality of their relationship.

Do they challenge one another?

Do they notice different patterns?

If not, even brilliant individuals may think poorly together.

Is the machine smarter than the human?
