Where Thinking Happens — IV. The Ecology of Intelligence

When biologists first began studying forests, they naturally focused on trees.

A forest, after all, appeared to be little more than a collection of individual organisms sharing the same piece of land.

The more closely they looked, however, the stranger the picture became.

Trees exchange nutrients through vast underground fungal networks.

They respond to environmental stresses in ways influenced by neighbouring plants.

The health of one species depends upon countless relationships with others.

A forest is not simply a gathering of trees.

It is an ecosystem.

Its most important properties belong not to individual organisms but to the relationships that connect them.

Something similar may be true of intelligence.

For centuries we have searched for intelligence where early biologists searched for life.

Inside individuals.

How intelligent is this child?

This scientist?

This chimpanzee?

This machine?

These are perfectly reasonable questions.

But perhaps they resemble asking how much of the forest exists inside a single tree.

Many of the intellectual achievements we admire emerge only because minds become connected.

Science is not merely the work of scientists.

It is a network of laboratories, journals, conferences, correspondence, criticism and shared methods extending across generations.

Remove those relationships, and science as we know it disappears.

The same is true of music.

A composer inherits traditions.

Performers reinterpret them.

Audiences reshape future performances through their responses.

Teachers pass techniques to students, who later transform them in unexpected ways.

Culture itself is an ecosystem of interacting minds.

Even our individual thinking bears the marks of this larger environment.

Every language carries assumptions about the world.

Every discipline provides conceptual tools that make some questions easier to ask than others.

Every conversation leaves subtle traces that influence future thought.

The mind is not sealed from its surroundings.

It develops within them.

This is hardly a new observation.

Philosophers, psychologists and anthropologists have long recognised that human cognition is profoundly social.

What may be new is the scale and character of the environments in which cognition now unfolds.

For the first time, our cognitive ecosystems increasingly include participants that are neither human beings nor passive repositories of information.

They respond.

They suggest.

They challenge.

They remember differently from us.

They search differently from us.

They connect ideas differently from us.

Whether these participants should be regarded as intelligent in their own right remains open to debate.

Fortunately, that question is not essential to the argument.

A forest does not require every component to resemble a tree.

Fungi are not trees.

Rivers are not trees.

Soils are not trees.

Yet without them there is no forest.

Likewise, a cognitive ecosystem need not consist entirely of minds that resemble our own.

Different participants may contribute different capacities.

Some remember.

Some calculate.

Some imagine.

Some criticise.

Some notice patterns invisible to others.

The intelligence of the whole may depend less upon the brilliance of any individual participant than upon the richness of their interactions.

This possibility encourages a subtle change in perspective.

Instead of asking whether one mind is more intelligent than another, we might ask a different question.

What kinds of relationships make better thinking possible?

That question shifts our attention away from isolated capacities and towards the architecture of collaboration.

A healthy ecosystem is not one containing the single strongest organism.

It is one in which diverse organisms sustain one another.

Perhaps the same is true of thinking.

Perhaps intelligence flourishes not where minds become identical, but where they become complementary.

If that is so, then the future of intelligence may depend less upon building ever more capable individuals—whether biological or artificial—and more upon understanding how different forms of cognition can coexist, challenge one another and create possibilities that none could achieve alone.

The future, in other words, may not belong to isolated minds.

It may belong to intellectual ecosystems.
