Every few months, another article asks the same question.
Can artificial intelligence really think?
The answers vary. Some insist that today's systems merely imitate understanding. Others argue that intelligence has always consisted of behaviour, making the distinction meaningless. The debate has become so familiar that one could almost write the next instalment before it appears.
It is undoubtedly an important question.
But I wonder whether it is the most interesting one.
Suppose we have been asking the wrong question.
For centuries we have treated intelligence as something possessed by individuals. We ask whether a child is intelligent, whether a scientist is intelligent, whether a crow is intelligent, whether an octopus is intelligent. Now we ask whether a machine is intelligent.
The pattern is always the same.
We begin by identifying an individual, and then we ask whether intelligence can be found inside it.
This seems so natural that we scarcely notice we are making an assumption.
Yet many of the greatest achievements of human thought have never belonged to a single mind.
No individual invented mathematics.
No individual created science.
No individual built modern medicine.
Even philosophy, perhaps the most solitary of pursuits, is really a conversation extending across millennia. Every philosopher inherits questions, concepts and distinctions from predecessors before contributing something that later thinkers may refine, reject or transform.
Human intelligence has always been social.
More than that, it has always been technological.
Writing did not simply preserve thought; it changed what thought could become. A notebook allows ideas to persist long enough to be revised. A diagram reveals relationships too intricate to hold entirely in memory. A library permits conversations with people separated by centuries. Every cognitive technology quietly alters the landscape of thinking itself.
The history of civilisation can therefore be read not merely as a history of inventions, but as a history of increasingly sophisticated partnerships between minds and the tools that extend them.
Perhaps intelligence has never been confined to the skull.
This possibility feels strangely unfamiliar because we continue to speak as though minds are isolated islands.
They are not.
A conversation often reaches conclusions that neither participant anticipated. A research team discovers patterns that escape every individual member. A musical ensemble creates expressions that no performer could produce alone. Even reading is a curious collaboration between author and reader, with meaning arising through an encounter rather than residing entirely in either.
Where, exactly, is the intelligence in these moments?
Inside one person?
Inside another?
Or somewhere within the relationship itself?
These questions have acquired new urgency because our cognitive tools have changed.
For thousands of years, our tools stored information.
Now, for the first time, many of them appear able to participate in reasoning.
Whether these systems genuinely understand is a fascinating philosophical question. But another question now presses upon us with equal force.
What happens when human intelligence enters into sustained relationships with systems that can participate in thought?
Not replace thought.
Participate in it.
The distinction matters.
Throughout history, new technologies have expanded our physical abilities. Wheels amplified movement. Telescopes extended sight. Engines multiplied strength.
Perhaps we are now encountering technologies that amplify cognition itself.
If so, we should expect something more interesting than the appearance of another intelligent entity.
We should expect the emergence of new forms of thinking.
This series is an exploration of that possibility.
It does not begin by asking whether machines are intelligent.
Instead, it begins with a different question.
What kinds of intelligence become possible when thinking itself becomes a relationship?
