A single organism is already a remarkable achievement of coordination.
Billions of processes must occur together without becoming indistinguishable. Cells must respond to one another. Organs must regulate one another. Neural systems must integrate competing possibilities. The organism must maintain enough stability to persist while remaining sufficiently responsive to change.
Life is therefore not simply a collection of parts.
It is an organised relation among parts.
But something equally remarkable happens when organisms encounter one another.
They can begin to coordinate.
One movement changes the possibilities available to another. One organism's behaviour becomes part of another's environment. Responses become reciprocal. Patterns stabilise across individuals.
A social system emerges.
Music gives us one of the clearest places to observe this transition.
A musical ensemble is not merely a collection of musicians playing individual parts. It is an organised system in which the actions of each participant continuously alter the possibilities available to the others.
The interesting question is how we get from one to the other:
How does value within organisms become coordination between organisms?
And perhaps even more intriguingly:
How does coordination between organisms become music?
The organism is already a coordination problem
We began this series with the observation that things matter to living systems.
But an organism cannot respond to everything.
Its environment contains more differences than it can discriminate, more possibilities than it can pursue, more signals than it can process.
Its organisation therefore depends upon selection.
Some differences alter its state.
Some alter its behaviour.
Some are ignored.
Some become salient.
Some become associated with other differences.
The organism is continuously regulating itself through such distinctions.
Edelman's notion of biological value is important here because it reminds us that this selectivity is not an optional addition to life. It is part of what being alive means.
An organism is not a neutral information-processing machine receiving a world and then deciding what matters.
Its organisation already embodies histories of what has mattered.
Value is therefore woven into its activity.
And this gives us the first step toward social coordination.
The organism becomes another organism's environment
When two organisms encounter one another, something changes.
Each becomes part of the other's environment.
A movement by one can alter the sensory field of the other.
A sound can alter attention.
A posture can alter behaviour.
A gesture can invite another gesture.
A withdrawal can produce pursuit.
A response can become the stimulus for another response.
This means that the relation between organisms is not simply:
organism A + organism B.
It is:
A alters B, B alters A, and the resulting changes alter A again.
The relation becomes recursive.
This is why social coordination cannot be reduced simply to the sum of individual behaviours.
Something happens between the organisms.
A pattern begins to exist at the level of their interaction.
From response to coordination
A single response is not yet coordination.
Coordination arises when responses become mutually organised.
Imagine two people walking side by side.
One accelerates slightly.
The other adjusts.
The first notices the adjustment and changes again.
After several such interactions, their steps become synchronised.
Neither person needs to calculate the other's movements explicitly.
Nor does either need a symbolic instruction.
The coordination emerges through reciprocal sensitivity.
Each organism becomes responsive to the other's behaviour, and the interaction settles into a pattern.
This is a simple example of something that occurs throughout social life.
It also reveals something important about communication.
Communication does not necessarily require the transmission of information from one mind to another.
It can consist in the mutual modification of possibilities.
Each participant changes the conditions under which the other acts.
Coordination emerges from this circularity.
The social system is not inside either organism
This is where Halliday's distinction between levels of complex organisation becomes useful.
The organism is a biological system.
But a social system is not simply a biological system multiplied by two.
It possesses a different kind of organisation.
The relation between organisms can acquire its own patterns, regularities and values.
A family, a colony, a crowd, a conversation, an orchestra — each can display forms of organisation that cannot be located entirely within any individual participant.
The social system exists in the relations.
This is particularly obvious in an ensemble.
No musician possesses the ensemble in isolation.
The ensemble exists in the coordination among musicians.
A conductor does not contain the orchestra.
A score does not contain the performance.
The performance emerges from the reciprocal organisation of people, instruments, sounds, expectations and responses.
Music therefore provides an unusually concrete example of a social system.
The ensemble as a distributed organism
There is a temptation to describe an ensemble metaphorically as a single organism.
The metaphor can be useful, but it should not obscure the difference.
An orchestra is not literally an organism.
Its members remain distinct organisms with their own nervous systems, histories and intentions.
Yet some of the organisational functions we associate with an organism can become distributed across the group.
Attention can become shared.
Timing can become collective.
Expectation can become mutual.
Corrections can propagate through the ensemble.
One musician's hesitation can alter another's phrasing.
A drummer can change the guitarist's timing.
The guitarist can alter the drummer's response.
The ensemble can therefore behave as a coordinated system without becoming a biological organism.
This is precisely what makes the transition from organism to social system philosophically interesting.
The organisational principle has changed.
Value becomes interorganism
Within an organism, value helps distinguish what matters to the organism's own activity.
Between organisms, value can become relational.
What matters is no longer simply:
What should I do?
It becomes:
What is happening between us, and how should my action respond to it?
This is a different form of value.
A musician does not merely hear a rhythm as an acoustic pattern.
The musician hears it as something to which they must coordinate.
The same beat that is simply a sound to a listener can become an instruction-like constraint for another performer.
But it still need not be symbolic.
The performer does not necessarily interpret the beat propositionally.
The beat changes the field of available action.
This is interorganism value.
The sound matters because of what it enables or constrains in the relation.
Entrainment
One of the clearest examples is entrainment.
Two oscillating systems can become coordinated in time.
In biological systems, rhythms can become coupled to one another.
Human interaction is full of such phenomena.
We synchronise steps.
We synchronise gestures.
We synchronise speech.
We synchronise applause.
And music makes this capacity extraordinarily explicit.
A pulse provides a temporal structure to which multiple organisms can become coupled.
Once coupled, each participant's behaviour becomes partly predictable from the shared pattern.
But predictability here is not passive.
It creates possibilities.
Because I know roughly when you will move, I can place my movement in relation to yours.
Because you anticipate my movement, you can respond before it is complete.
Coordination therefore produces a shared temporal horizon.
Music does not merely occupy time.
It can organise time between us.
The ensemble creates a field of mutual anticipation
This is perhaps the most important property of musical coordination.
An ensemble does not merely synchronise movements that are already determined.
It creates expectations about what is likely to happen next.
A musician hears a phrase and anticipates its continuation.
Another musician hears that anticipation and adjusts their own timing.
A small deviation can propagate through the ensemble.
A hesitation can become expressive.
A delay can create tension.
A sudden acceleration can alter the whole field of expectation.
The ensemble therefore becomes a dynamic system of mutual anticipation.
Each participant is responding not simply to what has happened, but to what they expect the others to do.
This gives music a peculiar temporal character.
The present is organised by an anticipated future.
And that future is not merely inside an individual mind.
It is distributed across the ensemble.
From coordination to expression
At this point we encounter something interesting.
An ensemble can begin with coordination that appears almost purely functional.
Stay together.
Keep the pulse.
Enter at the right moment.
But once the coordination becomes sufficiently sophisticated, deviations from it can themselves become meaningful.
A musician can delay an entry.
Another can follow.
A phrase can breathe.
A rhythm can push against the established pulse.
The ensemble can play with expectation.
Something that began as coordination becomes expressive.
But we should be careful here.
Expression does not necessarily mean symbolic representation.
The expressive effect can arise directly from the organisation of the interaction.
A slight delay can create tension because it violates an established temporal expectation.
A sudden silence can matter because of the activity that preceded it.
A crescendo can alter the collective field of attention.
The ensemble can therefore become expressive without first becoming linguistic.
Expression may emerge from the dynamics of coordination itself.
The social origin of musical form
This gives us another way to think about musical form.
We often describe musical form as though it were an abstract structure existing independently of human activity: repetition, variation, contrast, development, return.
But these formal relations can also be understood as relations among expectations.
A repeated pattern establishes a possibility.
A variation modifies it.
A return confirms it.
A disruption frustrates it.
A resolution closes it.
These relations are not merely properties of isolated sounds.
They are properties of a temporal activity shared among performers and listeners.
Form therefore has a social dimension.
It organises the expectations of participants.
This may help explain why musical form can be experienced as so compelling even when it conveys no determinate symbolic content.
The music is organising a field of possibilities in which we participate.
The listener enters the ensemble
At first it may seem that the ensemble consists only of the performers.
But the listener is not necessarily outside the system.
A listener's attention is coupled to the performance.
Applause alters the performers' experience.
Silence alters the room.
Movement in an audience can affect performers.
A performer can sense whether a room is attentive, restless, excited or withdrawn.
Even where no explicit feedback occurs, the listener participates through attention, anticipation and response.
The social system therefore extends beyond the stage.
A concert is not simply:
performers → music → audience.
It is a coupled system:
performers ↔ sound ↔ listeners.
The music exists as an event in this relational field.
This is another reason why it is difficult to regard music simply as an object carrying a message.
A musical performance is an interaction.
And this is where the signal becomes social
We can now return to the signal/sign distinction.
A signal is already relational.
But in an ensemble, signalling becomes recursive.
One musician's sound alters another musician's behaviour.
That behaviour produces another sound.
The new sound alters the first musician's behaviour.
The process continues.
There need be no explicit symbolic message at any point.
The ensemble can coordinate through a continuous circulation of signals.
This makes music a particularly interesting social phenomenon.
The music does not simply contain coordination.
It is coordination made audible.
That may be one of the deepest reasons music matters.
From organisms to ensembles
We can now sketch the transition we have been exploring:
organism → organism–organism relation → reciprocal signalling → coordination → shared temporal organisation → ensemble
At the biological level, value organises the possibilities of an organism.
At the social level, reciprocal value organises the possibilities of interaction.
At the musical level, organised sound becomes one of the means through which this coordination can be stabilised, intensified and explored.
Music is therefore not something that happens after social organisation.
In an important sense, music is one way social organisation becomes perceptible.
We hear people coordinating.
We hear expectations being established.
We hear deviations being negotiated.
We hear the emergence of a collective temporal order.
The sound is the trace of a relationship.
But where is the meaning?
This brings us back to the question that has haunted the series from the beginning.
If music can organise organisms into ensembles, perhaps we still do not need to ask what it means.
The music can matter because it coordinates.
It can matter because it creates a shared temporal world.
It can matter because it changes the possibilities of action.
It can matter because it allows individual organisms to become participants in a collective process.
Meaning may eventually enter.
But it need not be there at the beginning.
This is important because it suggests that the social may itself be older than the semiotic.
Organisms can coordinate before they can symbolise.
Groups can stabilise patterns of activity before those patterns become represented.
And music may be one of the places where this pre-semiotic sociality remains particularly visible.
The ensemble as a new kind of possibility
Something remarkable happens when organisms become coordinated.
New possibilities appear that did not exist for either organism alone.
Two musicians can produce counterpoint.
A group can produce harmony.
A rhythm section can create a groove.
An orchestra can produce a texture unavailable to any single instrument.
These are not simply larger quantities of individual behaviour.
They are new relational possibilities.
This is an important feature of emergence.
The ensemble does not merely add together the abilities of its members.
It creates a space of action that belongs to the relation itself.
And perhaps this gives us our first real glimpse of why music can become culturally significant without beginning as a semiotic system.
Culture does not have to invent significance from nothing.
It can take already existing forms of social coordination and elaborate them.
It can stabilise them.
Repeat them.
Teach them.
Transmit them.
Value them.
Eventually, it can give them symbolic meanings.
But the underlying capacity for coordination was already there.
Before the ensemble means anything
An ensemble can therefore exist before it has anything to say.
Musicians can play together before the performance represents anything.
Dancers can move together before the dance symbolises anything.
A crowd can clap together before the applause signifies anything beyond the shared activity.
A group can sing together before the song becomes an emblem of identity.
The social system comes first.
Meaning can be layered upon it.
This does not diminish the symbolic richness of music.
It explains how that richness becomes possible.
The semiotic does not float above the social world.
It grows out of a world already capable of coordination, expectation, participation and value.
Music sits at precisely this junction.
It transforms coordination into an experience that can itself be heard.
And once coordination becomes audible, something extraordinary becomes possible.
We can begin to enjoy the organisation itself.
We can attend to the relations.
We can anticipate them.
We can play with them.
We can deliberately frustrate them.
We can make coordination itself the object of aesthetic exploration.
At that point, the ensemble is no longer merely keeping together.
It is discovering what can happen between.
And perhaps this is where music begins to become art.
Not when sound acquires meaning.
But when a social system discovers that the organisation of its own possibilities can itself become something worth exploring.
The next question, then, is almost unavoidable:
What happens when that organisation of possibilities becomes rhythmic?
For rhythm does not merely coordinate organisms.
It gives coordination a form in time.
And once we begin to hear that form, we may be very close to understanding why music can move us without having to tell us anything at all.
