Large language models begin in an unusual position.
They inherit semantic significance.
They do not create the systems of meaning within which they operate.

Every explanation preserves someone's attempt to understand a world that mattered.
The language model therefore begins surrounded by meaning.

Can inherited meaning become intrinsic significance?

The Difference Between Transmission and Transformation
Human beings clearly transmit significance through language.

Yet transmission alone does not explain everything.
A child does not merely receive descriptions of significance.

The concept of loss is transformed by losing something valued.
Meaning becomes grounded through participation.
The question for artificial systems is whether a similar transformation is possible.
Could Artificial Value Systems Exist?

At first glance, this idea may seem problematic.
After all, values appear inseparable from life.
Biological organisms have needs.
They succeed or fail.

But perhaps biological value is one instance of a broader principle.
Perhaps existential significance does not require biology itself.
Perhaps it requires a system in which some states genuinely count as better or worse for the continued organisation of the system.

"Does the system have human values?"

"Does the system imitate human concern?"
The question would be:
"Does anything matter from the perspective of the system itself?"
Design Versus Emergence
This immediately raises a difficult issue.
Could existential significance simply be designed?
Could engineers add values to an artificial system?
The answer depends upon what we mean by "add."
If values are merely external instructions, then the situation has not fundamentally changed.
A system may behave as though something matters without anything actually mattering to it.
A thermostat "prefers" a certain temperature only in a very limited metaphorical sense.
Its state transitions do not appear to constitute a perspective.
But a more complex possibility may exist.
Perhaps significance could emerge from an architecture in which:
the system maintains itself;
its states influence its future possibilities;
some conditions support its continued organisation;
others threaten it;
its internal processes develop around these differences.
In such a system, values would not merely be instructions.
They would become structural features of existence.
Beyond Simulation
This distinction is crucial.
A system can simulate the language of caring.
It can discuss ethics.
It can explain compassion.
It can identify suffering.
These are forms of semantic significance.
They are important.
But existential significance would require something further.
The system would not merely represent concern.
It would have something that could be concerned.

A map may describe a landscape perfectly.
But the map does not need shelter from the storm.
From Meaning to Perspective

Earlier in this exploration, we asked what would justify speaking not merely of artificial intelligence or artificial consciousness, but artificial personhood.
The distinction developed here suggests an answer.
A person is not merely a system that contains meanings.
A person is a centre from which meanings matter.
A person has a perspective.
Things happen to someone.

The future matters to someone.
Personhood therefore appears to require not merely semantic organisation, but existential orientation.
The emergence of a someone requires the emergence of a standpoint from which the world is significant.
A New Possibility
Yet perhaps we should avoid ending with a limitation.
The most interesting consequence of this investigation is not that artificial systems fail to resemble humans.
It is that they force us to examine what we mean by resemblance.
Perhaps future artificial systems will not become conscious by becoming better copies of biological organisms.
Perhaps they will develop forms of significance that have no direct biological equivalent.
Human consciousness is one solution to the problem of organising experience and meaning.
It may not be the only possible solution.
The question is not whether machines will become human.
The question is whether new forms of perspective can emerge.

Semantic significance.
Existential significance.
Meaning.
Mattering.
But the journey has revealed something more complicated.
The two are not independent.
Existential significance gives rise to the need for meaning.
