The Evolution of Intelligibility VIII: When Worlds Meet

A way of seeing can become so familiar that it begins to feel like reality itself.

Its distinctions seem obvious.

Its questions seem natural.

Its methods seem self-evident.

Its categories seem to divide the world at its joints.

This is one of the conditions that makes intellectual contact so difficult.

For when two different modes of intelligibility meet, they do not simply bring different answers to the same questions.

They may bring different questions.

Different objects.

Different standards of relevance.

Different assumptions about what counts as an explanation.

Different ways of organising experience.

They may not even agree about what constitutes the phenomenon that is being discussed.

And yet, strangely, such encounters can be among the most fertile events in the evolution of intelligibility.

A new world can sometimes be born not from the elaboration of one mode of seeing, but from its encounter with another.

Consider what happens when disciplines meet.

Physics encounters mathematics.

Biology encounters chemistry.

Linguistics encounters psychology.

Computer science encounters biology.

Ecology encounters economics.

Anthropology encounters cognitive science.

None of these encounters simply consists of importing a collection of facts from one field into another.

The deeper event occurs when a relationship that was intelligible in one domain becomes suggestive in another.

A concept crosses a boundary.

A metaphor migrates.

A method is transformed.

A distinction acquires a new meaning.

The receiving discipline does not simply become like the source discipline.

Something else happens.

The concept changes as it enters a new environment.

This is why intellectual borrowing is rarely straightforward.

A word may travel.

Its meaning does not necessarily travel unchanged.

This is particularly clear from an SFL perspective.

Meaning is not a substance attached permanently to a word.

It is realised through choices in context, within a system of available meanings.

A term takes on its significance through the semantic relations it enters into, the purposes for which it is used, the genres in which it occurs, and the wider context of situation and culture.

When a term crosses disciplinary boundaries, therefore, it enters a new semantic environment.

Its relationships change.

Its potential meanings change.

Its functional role may change.

The word may remain recognisable while the conceptual network around it is transformed.

This is one reason interdisciplinary borrowing can be so productive.

A concept does not merely move from one place to another.

It is reconstrued.

The same is true of metaphor.

A metaphor can travel from one conceptual world into another, but the new world does not receive it passively.

It selects some of its affordances.

It suppresses others.

It extends the metaphor.

Sometimes it transforms it beyond recognition.

The history of science is full of such migrations.

"Field" moved from one conceptual domain into physics.

"Information" travelled across mathematics, communication theory, biology and computing.

"Selection" became a powerful term across evolutionary biology and beyond.

"Network" migrated from physical structures into biology, sociology and computation.

Each migration opened possibilities.

Each also carried risks.

A metaphor can illuminate a relationship while importing assumptions that do not belong in the new domain.

The challenge is therefore not simply to borrow.

It is to learn how to translate.

But translation itself needs reconsideration.

We often imagine translation as preserving a meaning while changing its linguistic form.

Yet when conceptual worlds meet, there may be no exact equivalent.

The problem is not:

"What is the word for this in the other vocabulary?"

It is:

"What relationship in this world plays a role comparable to the relationship I am trying to express?"

That is a much more demanding question.

It treats meaning relationally.

Instead of looking for identical objects, we look for corresponding positions within different systems of meaning.

This is why genuine translation can change both participants.

The translator learns that their own language was not as transparent as they had assumed.

The translated concept reveals distinctions that the original vocabulary had left implicit.

A new distinction becomes visible precisely because another mode of intelligibility made it necessary.

The encounter becomes reflexive.

We begin to see our own world from outside it.

This may be one of the greatest intellectual benefits of conceptual pluralism.

A mode of intelligibility is often least visible from within itself.

Its assumptions become obvious only when another mode does things differently.

A physicist encountering biology may discover that "explanation" does not have a single form.

A biologist encountering mathematics may discover relationships that are not dependent upon biological material.

A linguist encountering computation may discover new ways of thinking about formal systems.

A mathematician encountering physics may discover that abstract structures acquire unexpected significance when instantiated in nature.

Each discipline can become a mirror for another.

But the mirror is not passive.

It can distort.

And that distortion can be informative.

Suppose two disciplines use the same word differently.

Rather than deciding immediately that one must be wrong, we can ask:

What does each usage make possible?

What distinctions does each preserve?

What relationships does each foreground?

Why did the term evolve differently in the two environments?

The divergence itself may reveal something.

This is another sense in which intelligibility is ecological.

Concepts inhabit environments.

Their meanings depend partly upon their relationships with neighbouring concepts.

Change the environment and the concept may change.

Remove one distinction and another may become more important.

Introduce a new concept and an entire semantic network may reorganise.

A conceptual world is therefore more like an ecosystem than a dictionary.

Its elements depend upon one another.

The arrival of something new can alter the behaviour of everything around it.

This helps explain why interdisciplinary encounters can sometimes be unsettling.

A new concept may not simply add information.

It can disturb the existing equilibrium.

Questions that seemed unrelated become connected.

A distinction that seemed fundamental becomes optional.

A concept previously regarded as central becomes peripheral.

A new category creates unexpected intermediates.

The conceptual ecosystem begins to reorganise.

Sometimes this produces resistance.

The established world protects its boundaries.

Specialised vocabularies become markers of membership.

Methods become standards of legitimacy.

The outsider is told that they do not understand the field.

Sometimes this is entirely justified.

Expertise matters.

A concept cannot necessarily be transferred responsibly without understanding the practices in which it functions.

But sometimes the boundary itself becomes defensive.

The discipline begins to treat its own conceptual vocabulary as though it were the only legitimate language of reality.

At that point, contact becomes difficult.

The possibility of learning from elsewhere is mistaken for a threat to identity.

Yet conceptual evolution depends upon permeability.

A completely closed system cannot acquire genuinely new resources.

It can only recombine what it already possesses.

This does not mean that every boundary should disappear.

Boundaries are productive.

They preserve differences.

They allow distinct traditions to develop their own internal structures.

The goal is not conceptual homogenisation.

It is permeability without collapse.

Two worlds can meet while remaining different.

Indeed, they may need to remain different for the encounter to be productive.

If two modes of intelligibility become identical, there is no longer much to learn from their interaction.

Difference creates the possibility of translation.

Translation creates the possibility of transformation.

Transformation creates new intelligibility.

This is why some of the most creative intellectual developments occur at boundaries.

The boundary between disciplines.

The boundary between cultures.

The boundary between established theories.

The boundary between familiar and unfamiliar forms of experience.

The boundary between human and technological practices.

At the boundary, neither world completely determines what happens next.

There is room for negotiation.

And negotiation is itself a mode of meaning-making.

This brings us back to language.

From an SFL perspective, meaning is inherently social.

We do not develop our repertoires of meaning in isolation.

We negotiate meanings with others.

We accept, challenge, elaborate, reject and transform meanings in interaction.

A new conceptual world therefore becomes possible not merely when an individual thinks something new, but when that novelty enters a social process through which it can be interpreted.

Someone says:

"What if we looked at it this way?"

Someone else replies:

"That reminds me of something in another field."

A third person notices a difference.

A fourth finds a counterexample.

Gradually, a new semantic space begins to form.

No single participant necessarily designed it.

It emerges through interaction.

This is why dialogue can be epistemically productive.

The value of dialogue is not simply that more people contribute more information.

It is that different modes of construing experience are brought into relation.

Each can expose the assumptions of the others.

Each can provide resources the others lack.

Each can reveal relationships invisible from within the others.

The outcome may be disagreement.

It may be synthesis.

It may be a productive tension that never resolves completely.

All three can be intellectually valuable.

Indeed, premature synthesis can sometimes destroy what the encounter was capable of revealing.

Not every difference needs to be eliminated.

Some differences should remain.

They can function as permanent sources of perspective.

This suggests that intellectual maturity may involve learning to inhabit more than one mode of intelligibility without confusing them.

We can see an organism biologically, chemically, ecologically and historically.

We can see language lexicogrammatically, socially, cognitively and culturally.

We can see mathematics formally and structurally.

We can see a religious practice historically, sociologically, ritually and existentially.

These are not necessarily rival descriptions.

They may be different ways of entering into the phenomenon.

The danger comes when one mode claims that because it is powerful, every other mode must be reduced to it.

Reduction eliminates the very difference that made the encounter illuminating.

Pluralism, properly understood, is not the claim that every description is equally valid.

It is the recognition that intelligibility can be structured at different levels and through different relationships.

Some descriptions constrain others.

Some complement them.

Some contradict them.

Some reveal what others cannot.

The task is to discover the pattern of relations among them.

This is perhaps why the evolution of intelligibility increasingly resembles ecology.

There are niches.

Populations of concepts.

Flows of meaning.

Boundaries.

Competition.

Symbiosis.

Mutation.

Inheritance.

Extinction.

And sometimes the emergence of something that did not previously have a niche at all.

A new concept can create its own environment.

Once it exists, other concepts can relate to it.

New questions become possible.

New practitioners can gather around it.

New methods develop.

Eventually, an entire field may emerge.

The new world has become inhabited.

And yet the deepest lesson of conceptual encounters may be simpler.

We discover ourselves when we encounter another way of seeing.

A worldview becomes visible when it meets another worldview.

A language becomes more visible when we encounter a language that organises experience differently.

A discipline becomes more intelligible when it encounters another discipline.

Our own assumptions become objects of thought only when something gives us reason to notice them.

Perhaps, then, conceptual evolution requires not only novelty but encounter.

A world cannot fully understand its own limits from within itself.

It needs an outside.

Or at least something sufficiently different to function as an outside.

The encounter may be uncomfortable.

It may produce misunderstanding.

It may require translation.

It may generate conflict.

But if the relationship remains open, something remarkable can happen.

We do not merely acquire another perspective.

We acquire the capacity to see our own perspective as a perspective.

And that may be one of the greatest evolutionary achievements available to intelligibility.

The world becomes capable of seeing itself through more than one set of distinctions.

Not because one world has defeated another.

Not because all worlds have merged into one.

But because the relationship between them has itself become intelligible.

Perhaps that is what happens when worlds meet.

The greatest possibility is not that one world wins.

It is that a relationship appears between worlds that neither world could have seen alone.
