A way of seeing becomes powerful by making some things intelligible.
It gives us distinctions.
It provides concepts.
It develops methods.
It teaches us what to attend to.
It allows us to ask questions that previously could not be asked.
And then, eventually, something strange can happen.
The very success of the mode of seeing begins to reveal what it cannot explain.
An anomaly appears.
A question refuses to fit.
A phenomenon behaves differently from what the framework predicts.
A relationship becomes visible that the existing conceptual vocabulary cannot comfortably express.
At first, this may look like a problem with the world.
Perhaps the observation is mistaken.
Perhaps the measurement is inaccurate.
Perhaps the experiment has been badly designed.
Perhaps the phenomenon is merely an exception.
Sometimes it is.
But sometimes the anomaly is telling us something more profound.
The problem may not be that reality has failed to conform to our way of seeing.
The problem may be that our way of seeing has reached its limit.
This is one of the great engines of intellectual change.
A mode of intelligibility does not usually collapse because someone suddenly discovers that it is false.
More often, it encounters phenomena that become increasingly difficult to accommodate within its existing distinctions and relationships.
Its boundaries become visible.
And this is an important distinction.
A limit is not the same thing as an error.
A map can be extraordinarily useful without representing every feature of the landscape.
A scientific theory can predict phenomena with astonishing accuracy while remaining unable to address questions that belong to another conceptual domain.
A mathematical framework can reveal an entire structure while leaving other structures outside its scope.
A language can make certain meanings available while making other distinctions difficult to express.
The existence of a limit does not invalidate a mode.
It tells us where that mode is powerful.
And sometimes where it is not.
The history of science provides many examples.
Classical mechanics did not become worthless when relativity appeared.
Its domain of applicability became clearer.
Newtonian mechanics remained extraordinarily successful within the conditions for which it was developed.
What changed was our understanding of where its concepts were sufficient.
Likewise, classical thermodynamics was not simply erased by statistical mechanics.
The relationship between macroscopic regularities and microscopic descriptions became more intelligible.
The older framework survived, but its place within a larger conceptual landscape changed.
Scientific revolutions therefore do not always replace one world with another.
Sometimes they reorganise the relationships among worlds.
The same phenomenon appears in biology.
An organism can be understood in terms of its physical chemistry.
But that does not necessarily exhaust what is intelligible about it.
The organism also develops.
It reproduces.
It participates in an ecosystem.
It inherits a history.
It occupies a niche.
It responds to other organisms.
Different modes of description reveal different relationships.
The problem arises when one mode assumes that because it can explain something at one level, it has therefore explained everything that matters about it.
Reduction can become a category error.
A molecular explanation of a biological process may be entirely successful without making ecological explanation unnecessary.
A neural description of an action may be accurate without making an account of its social meaning redundant.
A computational description of a cognitive process may illuminate function without settling every question about experience.
The issue is not whether one description is "really" the correct one.
The issue is what becomes intelligible through each.
This is where our earlier discussion of distinctions becomes important.
Every mode of intelligibility creates distinctions.
But every distinction also creates a boundary.
What lies on one side becomes foregrounded.
What lies on the other becomes backgrounded.
At first, this is precisely what makes the mode useful.
Without selection, there is no intelligibility.
But eventually the background may begin to press back.
Something that was treated as irrelevant begins to matter.
Something that had been regarded as noise begins to contain structure.
Something that had been considered an exception becomes systematic.
The boundary itself becomes an object of inquiry.
This is one reason anomalies are so important.
An anomaly is not simply a fact that contradicts a theory.
It can be a sign that the theory has created a question it cannot answer.
The anomaly therefore belongs to the history of intelligibility.
It is a message from the edge of a conceptual world.
Sometimes the response is to extend the existing framework.
Sometimes the response is to modify a distinction.
Sometimes a new metaphor becomes necessary.
Sometimes an entirely new mode of seeing emerges.
But the transition is rarely instantaneous.
There is usually a period of conceptual instability.
People continue to use the old vocabulary while attempting to describe phenomena that no longer fit comfortably within it.
New terms appear.
Old terms acquire new meanings.
Metaphors are stretched.
Distinctions become ambiguous.
Competing interpretations coexist.
This is not intellectual confusion in the simple sense.
It may be the environment in which a new intelligibility is being born.
Language is particularly revealing here.
From an SFL perspective, a community's semantic resources develop through use.
Meanings are not fixed objects stored independently of social activity.
They are realised through choices in context, and those choices can shift as a community encounters new situations.
A technical term can acquire new meanings.
A familiar expression can be reconfigured.
A new grammatical or lexical resource can make a previously difficult distinction easier to construe.
The linguistic system itself can become a site of conceptual adaptation.
This matters because a conceptual revolution cannot remain merely inside someone's head.
For a new mode of intelligibility to become durable, it must become shareable.
People need to be able to talk about what they are discovering.
They need to compare observations.
They need to teach one another.
They need to develop practices that reproduce the new way of seeing.
The evolution of intelligibility is therefore also an evolution of meaning-making resources.
And this explains why conceptual change can be so difficult.
We may encounter something for which our existing repertoire is inadequate.
But recognising that inadequacy does not automatically provide the vocabulary required to overcome it.
There can be a period in which people can see that something is wrong without yet being able to say what the alternative should be.
This is perhaps one of the most creative moments in intellectual history.
The old world is no longer sufficient.
The new world has not yet become articulate.
Between them lies a space of possibility.
It is tempting to think that progress occurs when someone fills that space with a better theory.
But perhaps that puts things backwards.
First, a mode of intelligibility reaches its limits.
Then the limits become productive.
Questions proliferate.
Metaphors are borrowed.
Distinctions are reconsidered.
Previously marginal observations become important.
Different conceptual resources are brought into relation.
Gradually, something new begins to cohere.
A new mode of seeing does not arrive from nowhere.
It grows out of the tensions generated by an older one.
This means that failure has an unusual role in the evolution of intelligibility.
Failure is not merely the opposite of knowledge.
Sometimes failure reveals the shape of what knowledge has not yet learned to see.
A failed prediction can reveal an inadequacy in a model.
A persistent anomaly can reveal an unrecognised relationship.
A conceptual contradiction can reveal that two distinctions have been drawn too sharply.
A linguistic difficulty can reveal that an experience has not yet found an adequate construal.
The limit therefore becomes informative.
It tells us something about the structure of our own way of seeing.
And perhaps this is why genuine intellectual progress can feel unsettling.
Learning to see something new is exhilarating.
Learning that the way in which we have been seeing has limits can be uncomfortable.
It can feel as though the ground has disappeared.
But the ground has not disappeared.
The old mode may still work within the domain where it was successful.
What has changed is our understanding of its place.
We have learned that no single perspective necessarily exhausts the relationships through which reality becomes intelligible.
This is not relativism.
It does not mean that every way of seeing is equally good.
Some modes predict better.
Some distinguish more effectively.
Some reveal relationships that others obscure.
Some permit richer forms of explanation.
Some generate fruitful questions.
The point is not that there are no standards.
The point is that the standards themselves belong to particular practices of intelligibility.
A mode becomes powerful partly because it establishes ways of determining what counts as a good question, a good observation, a good explanation and a good answer.
When the mode reaches its limits, these criteria may themselves become objects of reflection.
We begin to ask not only:
"Why doesn't our explanation work?"
but:
"What kind of explanation have we assumed we needed?"
Not merely:
"What did we fail to observe?"
but:
"What did our way of seeing make difficult to notice?"
Not merely:
"Which fact contradicts our model?"
but:
"What new relationship might this anomaly be pointing toward?"
These are evolutionary questions.
They turn attention from correcting an answer to transforming the space in which answers can be sought.
And that may be one of the deepest patterns in the evolution of intelligibility.
A mode of seeing begins by excluding.
It must exclude.
Without selection, everything is equally salient and nothing becomes intelligible.
But the excluded remainder does not necessarily remain silent.
Sometimes it returns as an anomaly.
Sometimes as an unanswered question.
Sometimes as an alternative perspective.
Sometimes as a metaphor from another domain.
And sometimes, eventually, as the beginning of a new way of seeing.
The evolution of intelligibility may therefore depend upon a peculiar rhythm:
distinction, success, exclusion, anomaly, reflection, transformation.
A way of seeing becomes possible by drawing boundaries.
It evolves when those boundaries become visible.
And perhaps the most creative question we can ask at the edge of any intellectual world is not:
"What is wrong with this way of seeing?"
but:
"What has this way of seeing taught us that it can no longer itself explain?"
For sometimes the limit of a mode is not where understanding ends.
It is where a new kind of understanding begins.
