The Evolution of Intelligibility II: The Birth of a Distinction

Before we can recognise a pattern, we must be able to tell one thing from another.

Before we can identify an object, we must distinguish it from its surroundings.

Before we can ask a question, we must distinguish what is being questioned from what is not.

It is tempting to think that distinctions simply reveal differences that were already there.

Sometimes they do.

But something more interesting can happen.

A distinction can create a new possibility for seeing.

Consider the distinction between figure and background.

Look at a tree against a sky.

The tree appears to stand out.

But the tree does not arrive carrying a label saying, "I am the figure."

Our perceptual system has learned to organise differences into a relationship.

Something becomes foreground.

Something becomes background.

The distinction makes an object available.

Now consider a more sophisticated example.

For centuries, living things were observed without biology possessing the modern concept of the cell.

Cells existed.

But "the cell" did not yet exist as an object of biological understanding.

Once microscopy, experimental practice, conceptual vocabulary and theoretical insight converged, an entirely new distinction became possible.

The boundary between cell and environment could be investigated.

Structure could be related to function.

Division could be observed.

Life could be re-described in terms of organised units.

Nothing had suddenly come into existence.

But something had become newly visible.

This is one of the most important features of conceptual evolution.

A distinction can make something observable that was previously present but unintelligible.

The same pattern appears throughout science.

Before Darwin, organisms could be observed in extraordinary detail.

But the distinction between inherited variation and differential reproductive success made a new explanatory world possible.

Before modern physics, falling bodies and moving objects were observed constantly.

But distinctions between mass, force, acceleration and inertia transformed what could be asked about motion.

Before genetics, organisms reproduced and inherited characteristics.

But the distinction between phenotype and hereditary information made a new domain of investigation possible.

Before information theory, messages could be sent and signals measured.

But distinguishing information from the physical medium carrying it opened another conceptual space.

In each case, a distinction did more than divide reality.

It reorganised what counted as relevant.

This is crucial.

The world contains indefinitely many differences.

But not every difference becomes a distinction.

A distinction becomes intellectually powerful when it allows relationships to become visible.

Once we distinguish inside from outside, we can ask how things cross boundaries.

Once we distinguish organism from environment, we can ask how organisms participate in ecological systems.

Once we distinguish signal from noise, we can ask how information is transmitted.

Once we distinguish observer from observed, we can ask how observation itself affects what is observed.

A distinction therefore does not merely separate.

It creates a space of possible relationships.

And with those relationships come questions.

This helps explain why conceptual revolutions can feel so strange in retrospect.

After a distinction has become established, it can seem obvious.

We wonder how anyone could have failed to see it.

But before the distinction existed as a usable way of thinking, the question itself may have been unavailable.

The difficulty was not that people lacked the answer.

They lacked the conceptual difference that would have made the question possible.

This is why education can be transformative in ways that are difficult to describe as simply "learning information."

A student may spend years looking at the same world.

Then someone introduces a distinction.

Suddenly everything changes.

The novice sees trees.

The botanist sees species, tissues, reproductive structures and ecological relationships.

The novice hears sounds.

The musician hears rhythm, harmony, timbre and phrase.

The novice sees marks on a page.

The mathematician sees structure.

The novice sees a conversation.

The linguist hears phonology, lexicogrammar, semantics and context.

The novice sees an image.

The art historian sees composition, convention, historical reference and visual rhetoric.

The world has not necessarily changed.

But its articulation has.

A new distinction has entered perception.

This also explains why language is so powerful.

A word does not merely attach a label to something already fully understood.

Sometimes a word stabilises a distinction.

Once a distinction can be named, it can be remembered, communicated, taught, questioned and refined.

Language allows distinctions to become social objects.

And once they become social objects, they can evolve.

A distinction may begin as a rough intuition.

It becomes a metaphor.

Then a term.

Then a technical concept.

Then perhaps an entire discipline grows around it.

The history of knowledge is full of such trajectories.

But there is a danger here.

A successful distinction can become so familiar that we forget it is a distinction.

We begin to imagine that reality itself is divided exactly as our concepts divide it.

The map becomes indistinguishable from the territory.

This is where intelligibility can become ideology.

A distinction that once opened the world can eventually close it.

If everything is classified according to a fixed conceptual scheme, phenomena that do not fit the scheme become anomalies, errors or irrelevancies.

The evolution of intelligibility therefore requires not only the creation of distinctions.

It requires the capacity to revise them.

Sometimes the most important discovery is that a distinction we thought was fundamental is actually inadequate.

Matter and energy.

Wave and particle.

Organism and environment.

Nature and culture.

Mind and body.

Subject and object.

Even these familiar distinctions can become unstable when new relationships are discovered.

This does not mean that distinctions are useless.

Quite the opposite.

We need distinctions in order to think.

The challenge is to remember that they are instruments of intelligibility rather than unquestionable divisions in reality.

Perhaps the deepest lesson is this:

To distinguish is to create a possibility for relationship.

We cannot understand connection without difference.

If everything were identical, there would be nothing to relate.

But difference without relationship would be equally unintelligible.

A world made entirely of isolated distinctions would contain no patterns, no systems, no structures, no meanings.

Intelligibility therefore requires both.

Difference makes relationship possible.

Relationship makes difference meaningful.

And this suggests something profound about the evolution of thought.

A new way of seeing does not begin when we acquire a complete new theory.

It begins when we learn to make a difference that matters.

Something previously unnoticed becomes distinguishable.

The distinction reveals a relationship.

The relationship generates questions.

The questions create concepts.

The concepts reorganise perception.

And a new world of intelligibility begins to emerge.

Perhaps every conceptual revolution begins this way.

Not with an answer.

With a difference.

A difference someone, somewhere, learns to see.
