Relational Cuts: On Images — 5. Attention as Participation

So far, the account has avoided a familiar figure: the one who sees.

This omission is not accidental.

Because the moment a “seer” is introduced, a second layer of assumptions arrives with it—subject, object, relation between them, direction of access, interiority, exteriority.

None of this has been granted.

And yet something like seeing is still being traced.

So the question now becomes unavoidable:

if something is given to be seen, and if objects are not yet available, and if differentiation precedes units, then what is the status of the one for whom anything is given?

We must proceed carefully here.

Because “for whom” already risks too much structure.

It implies a receiver, a standpoint, a location.

We do not yet have grounds for that.

So we begin again from constraint.

Something is given.

But “given” does not yet imply a giver or a receiver.

It only marks that appearance is not self-contained.

It depends on conditions that are not reducible to what appears.

Earlier, we called this a field, though that term now feels increasingly inadequate.

Now we encounter another pressure point.

If there is differentiation without units, and if this differentiation can stabilise into something like visibility, then the process cannot be entirely independent of what we casually call attention.

But “attention” is a dangerous word here.

Because it usually names an act performed by a subject directed toward an object.

That model is already too late.

So we must attempt to reconstruct what “attention” might mean if neither subject nor object is available in advance.

What remains if we remove those assumptions?

Only this:

there is a selective stability in what becomes differentiated.

Not everything collapses into uniformity equally.

Some distinctions hold. Others do not.

Some patterns persist. Others dissolve.

Something in the system biases what can remain distinguishable.

This bias is not yet attributable to a viewer.

It is not yet located anywhere.

But it is real in the sense that without it, nothing would ever become stably differentiable at all.

So we can cautiously reframe attention.

Not as a faculty.
Not as an act.
Not as an internal spotlight.

But as:

the participation of differentiation in its own stabilisation.

This is deliberately awkward language, because anything more familiar would reintroduce the subject-object structure prematurely.

What matters is this:

differentiation is not passive.

It does not simply occur and then get noticed.

It is actively maintained in certain configurations and not in others.

And whatever we later call “attention” is already entangled in that maintenance.

So attention, in this stripped register, is not something that stands outside the field we have been trying to describe.

It is part of the conditions under which that field does not collapse into uniformity.

But again, we must resist the temptation to reify this.

We are not introducing a new entity called “attention.”

We are naming a functional constraint:

some differentiations persist, others do not, and this asymmetry is essential to the possibility of anything being given at all.

At this point, something important becomes visible.

The earlier separation between “field,” “differentiation,” and now “attention” is beginning to look less like a set of distinct components and more like different ways of describing the same underlying constraint system.

But we are not yet entitled to unify them.

We can only note the convergence.

So the situation can be stated in its most minimal form:

  • there is no object yet
  • there is no subject yet
  • there is no stable separation between them
  • and yet there is non-uniform persistence in what can be distinguished

Whatever we are approaching is not one of these terms.

It is the condition under which they could later become meaningful.

And so “attention,” if the word is to remain at all, must be understood not as an addition to the system, but as one of the ways in which the system prevents collapse.

Not a viewer.
Not a gaze.
Not a mental act.

But the fact that differentiation does not remain evenly distributed.

And this unevenness is not optional.

It is what makes anything appear.

We are still not in a position to say what appears.

But we are now closer to understanding what must already be happening for appearance not to fail.
