A Grammar of a World: II. Light, Distinction and Seeing

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

The first act of differentiation in Genesis is preceded by something deceptively simple: light.

In the previous post, we saw that the grammar gives us a striking sequence:

God said → Let there be light → there was light.

A possible state of affairs is projected and then actualised.

But the story does not stop there.

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

Something has now changed.

The light that has come to be is not merely there. It is seen.

The process saw is mental rather than material. God is the Senser, while the light is what is seen — the Phenomenon.

And the grammar immediately expands that Phenomenon:

that it was good

The newly actualised light is therefore not merely perceived. It is apprehended and evaluated.

This gives us a sequence that is more interesting than simple creation:

actualisation → perception → evaluation

Only then comes:

division

God divided the light from the darkness.

The distinction between light and darkness is therefore not simply given at the outset. Darkness was already present in the second verse:

and darkness was upon the face of the deep.

Light is then brought into the field, perceived, evaluated, and divided from the darkness.

The grammar thus allows us to distinguish two things that might otherwise be collapsed:

existence and distinction.

Something may exist without yet being construed as a distinct element within an organised field.

Light makes a distinction possible; the act of dividing makes that distinction explicit.

We should be careful not to turn this into a theory of physics. The light of Genesis is light in the narrative, not a metaphor that we are obliged to decode as consciousness, reason, knowledge, or anything else.

But light has a particular conceptual affordance that the narrative itself will exploit: it makes things distinguishable.

And this is where seeing becomes important.

Seeing is not simply another event following creation. It introduces a different kind of relation to what has been created. The thing that has come to be can now become Phenomenon for a Senser.

The world is therefore beginning to acquire a second-order structure.

Things can happen.

Things can be perceived.

And what is perceived can be evaluated.

The phrase “that it was good” is especially significant because evaluation is not another material change to the light. Nothing is physically done to the light by calling it good.

Something has happened in the construal of the light.

The narrative has moved from what something is to how it is assessed.

This is the first appearance of explicit evaluation in the story, and it will recur throughout the chapter. Each time, the created configuration becomes available to God as something that can be seen and evaluated.

So the pattern is beginning to repeat:

actualise → perceive → assess

And differentiation follows.

But differentiation itself is not yet naming.

The light is divided from the darkness, but it has not yet been called Day. That comes in the next verse.

This gives us a small but important progression:

something comes to be → it becomes perceptible → it is evaluated → it is distinguished → it can be identified.

The story is therefore doing more than filling an empty universe with things.

It is progressively constructing differences that can be recognised.

And once a difference can be recognised, it can be named.

That will be the next step.

For now, the important point is simply this:

A world does not become differentiated merely by containing different things. It becomes differentiated when differences are construed as differences.

Genesis has barely begun, and already the grammar has given us creation, perception, evaluation and distinction.

The light is there.

God sees it.

It is good.

And now there are two things where before there was an undifferentiated darkness:

light and darkness.

The world is beginning to have structure.

And, perhaps more importantly, that structure is beginning to become available for recognition.
