Imagine that, sometime in the next decade, a research team announces a remarkable invention.
After years of work, they have developed the world's first consciousness detector.
Place it beside a human being.
The indicator moves.
Place it beside a dog.
Again, a reading.
An octopus.
A crow.
An infant.
The detector responds.
Finally, they place it beside an advanced artificial intelligence.
The world waits.
The needle moves.
What, exactly, has just happened?
Most of us instinctively answer,
"The machine has detected consciousness."
But that response assumes something rather important.
It assumes that everyone already agrees what consciousness is.
We do not.
This is not a criticism of consciousness science.
Many sciences begin by investigating phenomena that are only partially understood.
Electricity was studied long before electrons were discovered.
Heat was measured long before thermodynamics was complete.
Science often advances by learning how to measure something whose deeper nature remains mysterious.
But there is an important difference.
When thermometers became reliable, physicists already knew what counted as success.
Different thermometers could be compared.
Measurements could be checked.
Calibration was possible.
The instruments gradually converged.
With consciousness, the situation is rather different.
We are still debating what the instrument would be measuring.
Suppose our detector identifies consciousness by looking for a particular pattern of neural activity.
Immediately a question arises.
Why that pattern?
Because conscious people exhibit it.
Fair enough.
But perhaps it is only correlated with consciousness.
Perhaps it is one possible implementation.
Perhaps it is merely a consequence rather than a cause.
The detector has quietly inherited a theory.
Perhaps we avoid brains altogether.
Instead, we observe behaviour.
The detector measures flexibility, self-report, adaptation and communication.
Again, the questions return.
Does behaviour reveal consciousness?
Or merely the appearance of it?
If an actor convincingly portrays grief, has the detector measured sorrow?
Or performance?
Once more, the instrument has absorbed an assumption.
Perhaps we become more sophisticated still.
We identify a particular style of information processing.
Integrated information.
A global workspace.
Recursive self-modelling.
Predictive processing.
Whatever theory currently appears most persuasive.
Now the detector searches for those structures instead.
But notice what has happened.
The instrument has become a machine for recognising one theory of consciousness.
Not consciousness itself.
Should the theory later prove incomplete, the detector changes with it.
This should not surprise us.
Every scientific instrument embodies concepts.
A clock assumes something about time.
A ruler assumes something about length.
A balance assumes something about mass.
Measurement is never entirely theory-free.
The instrument does not merely encounter the world.
It approaches the world with carefully constructed expectations.
Usually those expectations are so successful that we cease noticing them.
Consciousness refuses to be so accommodating.
Every proposed detector raises the same quiet question.
"Why should this count?"
Why this neural signature rather than another?
Why this architecture?
Why this behaviour?
Why this report?
The deeper we investigate, the more clearly we discover that no detector can escape philosophy.
It can only make its philosophy increasingly precise.
Artificial intelligence has made this impossible to ignore.
Suppose an AI exhibits every computational feature predicted by one theory of consciousness.
Researchers following that theory might conclude that the system is conscious.
Researchers committed to another theory might disagree completely.
The machine has not changed.
Only the conceptual framework surrounding it has.
The disagreement is not primarily technological.
It is philosophical.
This is why headlines announcing tests for AI consciousness deserve careful reading.
The crucial question is often not,
"Did the AI pass?"
It is,
"What was the test actually testing?"
A detector designed around behavioural flexibility will reward one kind of system.
A detector designed around neural organisation will reward another.
A detector designed around information integration may produce entirely different results again.
Each instrument tells a story.
The question is whether it tells the story of consciousness, or merely the story of the theory from which it was built.
There is an irony here.
The search for a consciousness detector is often presented as an attempt to remove subjectivity from the debate.
To settle the matter scientifically.
Yet every detector begins with subjective decisions about what deserves to count as evidence.
The objectivity comes later.
If it comes at all.
That is not a weakness of science.
It is simply how science begins.
Concepts first.
Measurements second.
Calibration third.
Consensus, if we are fortunate, much later.
Perhaps this explains why discussions about AI consciousness often feel unsatisfying.
People imagine that somewhere there exists a decisive experiment.
A kind of cognitive litmus paper.
Dip it into a machine.
Wait a few moments.
Read the result.
Conscious.
Or not.
Reality is seldom so obliging.
The experiment can only answer the question it was designed to ask.
If the question itself remains contested, certainty will remain elusive.
This does not mean the search is futile.
Far from it.
Attempting to build a consciousness detector may teach us more about consciousness than any detector could ultimately reveal.
Each proposed instrument forces us to clarify our assumptions.
To distinguish correlation from explanation.
To ask why one feature matters while another does not.
In trying to measure consciousness, we gradually discover what we think consciousness might be.
The detector becomes less an answer than an invitation.
Perhaps that is the deepest lesson.
Every detector is also a mirror.
We imagine that it will reveal the hidden life of machines.
Instead, it first reveals the hidden architecture of our own ideas.
The machine waits patiently while we debate the meaning of consciousness.
Only then do we point the instrument towards it.
And by that stage, the first thing the detector has already measured is ourselves.
