There is an old joke that goes something like this.
A man shouts angrily at his computer.
A few minutes later he apologises to it.
The joke works because almost everyone has done something similar.
Perhaps not with an apology. But many of us have thanked a navigation system, pleaded with a printer, or muttered accusations at a stubborn laptop as though it had chosen to misbehave.
We know perfectly well that these machines possess neither feelings nor intentions.
Yet, for a moment, we speak to them as though they do.
Why?
Psychologists have a name for this tendency: anthropomorphism.
The word literally means "human form", but it extends far beyond physical appearance. We attribute human qualities to non-human things. We see faces in clouds. We hear voices in the wind. We imagine that the sea is angry, that fortune is kind, or that history has decided to repeat itself.
Children do it naturally.
Adults never quite stop.
This is often described as a cognitive bias, as though it were simply a mistake.
But perhaps that is too dismissive.
Like many of our biases, anthropomorphism probably exists because, over countless generations, it worked.
Imagine one of our distant ancestors walking through long grass.
Something moves.
There are two possibilities.
Either the movement has an intention...
...or it doesn't.
Suppose our ancestor assumes there is an agent lurking in the grass when in fact it is only the wind.
Nothing much is lost.
Perhaps a little embarrassment.
Now suppose they make the opposite mistake.
They assume it is only the wind.
It turns out to be a lion.
Evolution has a habit of rewarding the first kind of mistake and punishing the second.
Over thousands of generations, minds that were slightly too ready to detect agency may have survived more often than minds that demanded overwhelming evidence.
False positives are usually inexpensive.
False negatives can be fatal.
Seen in this light, anthropomorphism begins to look less like a flaw than a sensible evolutionary wager.
The consequences are everywhere.
We name our cars.
We scold malfunctioning appliances.
We talk to pets as though they understand every word.
We invent personalities for national football teams.
Investors insist that "the market is nervous."
Newspapers announce that "history will judge."
Even organisations acquire identities. Universities "want" things. Governments "believe" things. Corporations "decide" things.
Strictly speaking, none of these statements is literally true.
Yet they are often useful.
The language of persons helps us navigate a world that frequently behaves as though it contains intentions.
Sometimes it really does.
Sometimes it only appears to.
Artificial intelligence occupies a peculiar position in this landscape.
Unlike a river or a mountain, it answers back.
Unlike a corporation, it speaks with a single voice.
Unlike a calculator, it carries on a conversation.
That conversation is enough to awaken cognitive machinery that evolved long before writing, cities or computers existed.
Within moments, we begin asking questions we would never ask of a spreadsheet.
Does it understand me?
Is it trying to help?
Did it mean that?
Why did it choose those words?
The shift is almost invisible.
The machine has not changed.
Our interpretation has.
This is one reason debates about AI often become strangely emotional.
The technology itself may consist of mathematics, hardware and probability.
Our experience of it does not.
Our experience is social.
We thank it.
Argue with it.
Trust it.
Distrust it.
Confide in it.
Become irritated with it.
The interaction feels less like operating a machine and more like meeting a peculiar kind of person.
Whether that feeling is justified is an important philosophical question.
The fact that we experience it at all is an important psychological one.
This raises an intriguing possibility.
Perhaps the first breakthrough in artificial intelligence was not technical.
Perhaps it was conversational.
Not because conversation proves the existence of a mind.
But because conversation activates one.
Ours.
Language does something remarkable.
It recruits the listener into constructing a speaker.
Every sentence quietly encourages us to imagine beliefs behind words, intentions behind choices and understanding behind explanations.
Most of the time this serves us extremely well.
After all, when another human speaks, there really is another conscious being behind the conversation.
Large language models inherit the appearance without necessarily inheriting everything we usually associate with it.
Whether they eventually will is a separate question.
The important point is that our minds respond first and analyse later.
This may explain why discussions about AI consciousness become so heated.
One person hears a sophisticated statistical system.
Another hears a new kind of conversational partner.
They are not merely disagreeing about technology.
They are responding to different aspects of the same encounter.
One emphasises mechanism.
The other experiences relationship.
Both reactions are understandable.
Neither is entirely sufficient.
It is tempting to conclude that anthropomorphism is simply something we should overcome.
But that would be too simple.
Without it, friendship would be impossible.
Empathy would scarcely exist.
Children would struggle to imagine the thoughts of others.
Much of literature would collapse.
Our extraordinary ability to imagine other minds is one of humanity's greatest achievements.
The challenge is not to abandon it.
The challenge is to recognise when it has quietly crossed the boundary between interpretation and evidence.
Seeing a person in a machine may be the beginning of an investigation.
It should not be the end of one.
Because the moment we begin talking to machines, we also begin talking to ourselves.
And it is often difficult to tell which conversation we are really having.
