Few achievements in human history rival modern science.
It has transformed medicine, communication, transport, agriculture, engineering, astronomy, and countless other fields. It has revealed worlds that no unaided human being could ever have imagined: galaxies beyond galaxies, the architecture of DNA, the strange behaviour of quantum particles, and the deep history of the universe itself.
Science deserves every admiration it receives.
Yet admiration sometimes tempts us into a subtle misunderstanding.
Because science has been so extraordinarily successful, we begin to imagine that it reveals reality as it truly is, while everything else is somehow secondary, subjective, or merely interpretative.
But perhaps science's greatness lies elsewhere.
Perhaps its power comes not from seeing all of reality, but from learning to see one aspect of reality with extraordinary clarity.
Imagine watching an orchestra.
One listener attends to the melody.
Another to the harmony.
Another to the rhythm.
Another to the conductor.
None hears the entire performance in every possible way.
Each hears something that becomes intelligible through disciplined attention.
Science works in much the same way.
From the beginning of the scientific revolution, its remarkable achievement was not simply the discovery of new facts.
It was the disciplined decision to attend primarily to stable, measurable, material relationships.
That decision changed history.
Galileo did not deny colour, beauty, joy, grief, purpose, or meaning.
He simply recognised that certain questions could be answered far more reliably if attention remained fixed upon those aspects of experience that could be measured, compared, repeated, and expressed mathematically.
The result was astonishing.
By narrowing its focus, science enormously expanded its explanatory power.
This is the opposite of limitation.
It is disciplined vision.
We encounter the same principle in everyday life.
A musician hears relationships in sound that others miss.
A chess master recognises possibilities invisible to a beginner.
An experienced physician notices patterns that escape the untrained eye.
Expertise is always selective.
Its strength lies precisely in knowing what deserves attention.
Science is one of the greatest examples of this principle ever developed.
Yet every discipline also leaves some questions outside its immediate concern.
A physicist can describe the wavelengths of light reflected from a painting with extraordinary precision.
An art historian can describe the painting's place within a cultural tradition.
A psychologist may investigate emotional responses.
None replaces the others.
Each organises experience according to different questions.
To recognise this is not to diminish science.
It is to appreciate it more accurately.
Indeed, many of the most persistent public arguments about science arise because people ask it to answer questions it was never designed to address.
Can science measure beauty?
Can it calculate justice?
Can it discover the meaning of a promise?
Can it determine whether forgiveness is wise?
Science can illuminate aspects of all these questions.
But the questions themselves belong to worlds of meaning that cannot be exhausted by measurement alone.
This is not because they are vague or irrational.
It is because they concern different organisations of experience.
Every discipline has its own remarkable powers of perception.
Science has cultivated perhaps the most powerful methods ever devised for revealing stable material relationships.
That achievement remains one of humanity's greatest intellectual triumphs.
But triumph should never be mistaken for completeness.
Reality does not become exhausted by the questions that any one discipline has learned to ask.
Nor does recognising other forms of understanding reduce the authority of science within its own domain.
Quite the opposite.
It helps us understand why science has been so successful.
It succeeds because it has learned, with extraordinary discipline, what to attend to—and, equally importantly, what to leave aside.
Perhaps, then, the most respectful question we can ask is not,
"What can science explain?"
but,
"What kind of world becomes visible when science teaches us how to see?"
That question does not place science beneath other ways of understanding.
It places science alongside them as one of humanity's greatest achievements in the art of making reality intelligible.
