The crow wakes before the morning is fully light.
The roost is already moving.
Wings shift.
Branches tremble.
Calls pass through the trees.
One crow leaves.
Then another.
The sky begins to brighten.
Below, the streets are becoming visible.
Cars move along the road.
A bin stands beside a house.
The lid is closed.
The crow lands nearby.
It watches.
Nothing happens.
It moves on.
In a park, the ground is wet.
Leaves cover the grass.
The crow walks between them.
It turns one leaf.
Then another.
A beetle moves.
The crow catches it.
It swallows.
Further away, another crow is feeding.
The two birds watch one another.
Neither approaches.
A dog runs across the grass.
Both crows lift their heads.
The dog passes.
They return to feeding.
The morning grows warmer.
The crow flies to a tree.
From the branch, the world is different.
Movement appears below.
A person opens a bag.
A bird crosses the road.
A car stops.
Something glints near the pavement.
The crow flies down.
It is a small piece of metal.
The crow picks it up.
Drops it.
Picks it up again.
Then leaves it.
There are other things to find.
Later, the crow carries a piece of food to a quiet place.
It places the food beneath leaves.
It looks around.
A second crow approaches.
The first crow moves away.
The second crow waits.
The first watches from a branch.
After a while, the second crow leaves.
The first returns.
The food is still there.
The day continues.
A sound comes from above.
The crow looks up.
Another crow is flying.
The call is answered.
For a moment, several birds gather.
They move through the trees together.
Then they separate.
One lands on a roof.
Another disappears behind a building.
The crow remains.
The afternoon changes the light.
Shadows lengthen.
The streets become busier.
The crow watches from a power line.
Below, a car stops.
Something falls from it.
The crow waits.
The car moves away.
The crow descends.
There is food.
It takes what it can carry.
A second crow arrives.
The first leaves.
The food is carried elsewhere.
Later, rain begins.
The crow shelters beneath a roof.
Water runs along the gutter.
The city changes.
The crow watches.
A puddle forms.
A leaf floats in it.
The rain stops.
The crow steps into the wet street.
Its reflection moves beneath it.
Evening comes.
The crows begin to gather again.
They cross the sky in small groups.
Calls pass between them.
Some birds arrive from places the crow cannot see.
Others leave.
The roost becomes crowded.
Branches bend under their weight.
There is movement everywhere.
The crow settles.
For a while it remains still.
Then another crow arrives beside it.
They sit together.
The light disappears.
The city becomes a pattern of windows and darkness.
The trees become black shapes against the sky.
The crow sleeps.
Tomorrow the streets will be there.
The trees will be there.
The bins will be there.
The food will be somewhere.
The other crows will be somewhere.
But not exactly where they were today.
The crow will look again.
It will remember some places.
It will return to some.
It will ignore others.
It will find something that was not there before.
And something that was there today will be gone.
The world will have changed.
So will the crow.
Morning will come again.
And the crow will look out over the city.
