The Senior Common Room Repairs the Universe Or: If Reality Is a Machine, Where Is the Workshop?

Professor Quillibrace knew immediately that the day was lost.

Mr Blottisham entered pushing a wheelbarrow.

Inside it were three spanners, two screwdrivers, a hammer, a roll of insulating tape, an oil can, and what appeared to be an adjustable wrench of heroic proportions.


Professor Quillibrace looked over his spectacles.


"No."


Blottisham stopped.


"I haven't said anything yet."


"You have brought tools."


"I have."


"You intend to use them."


"I hope so."


Professor Quillibrace sighed.


"I repeat."


"No."


Miss Stray entered a moment later carrying her tea.

She looked at the wheelbarrow.

Then at Professor Quillibrace.


"I see we're repairing the universe today."


Professor Quillibrace blinked.


"How did you know?"


"Mr Blottisham has labelled the wheelbarrow."


Sure enough, attached to the handle was a neat handwritten sign.

UNIVERSAL MAINTENANCE KIT


Blottisham smiled proudly.


"I've come prepared."


"For what?"


"For the routine servicing."


Professor Quillibrace stared.


"Of?"


"The universe."


A silence settled over the room.


Finally Quillibrace spoke.


"I had not realised it was due."


"It must be."


"Must it?"


"Physicists keep describing the universe as though it were a machine."


"They sometimes do."


"So machines require maintenance."


"They do."


"Therefore..."


Professor Quillibrace closed his eyes.


"...there is no therefore."


Blottisham looked unconvinced.


"There must be a workshop."


"There is not."


"A maintenance schedule."


"No."


"Replacement parts."


"No."


"A warranty."


"No."


Miss Stray smiled into her teacup.


"It does seem rather poorly documented."


Blottisham removed a notebook.


"I've prepared a list."


Professor Quillibrace looked alarmed.


"How long is the list?"


"Only fourteen questions."


"Oh."


"I omitted the supplementary appendix."


Professor Quillibrace looked wistfully towards the door.


Item One


"If the universe is a machine..."


"It is not."


"...where is the engine?"


"There isn't one."


"Then what powers it?"


"It doesn't require powering."


Blottisham made a note.


"Self-powered."


"No."


"Extremely efficient?"


"No."


"Battery missing?"


"No."


Miss Stray leaned over.


"I think the notebook is becoming more entertaining than the discussion."


Item Two


"If the universe is a machine..."


Professor Quillibrace sighed.


"...yes?"


"Who designed it?"


"Physics does not answer that question."


"So the engineer is unknown."


"No."


"Missing."


"No."


"On annual leave?"


"No."


Professor Quillibrace paused.


"Blottisham..."


"Yes?"


"I have begun to suspect that you are imagining a very large bicycle."


Blottisham looked surprised.


"I wasn't."


"What were you imagining?"


"A steam engine."


Miss Stray burst into laughter.


Item Three


Blottisham picked up the oil can.


"I assume this is unnecessary."


"Entirely."


"Pity."


"Why?"


"I had hoped to reduce friction."


"There is no universal gearbox."


"There really isn't?"


"No."


Miss Stray looked thoughtful.


"It is interesting, though."


Professor Quillibrace looked at her.


"What is?"


"We often describe systems as though they had mechanisms."


"Indeed."


"And mechanisms as though they had purposes."


Professor Quillibrace nodded slowly.


"That is true."


Blottisham looked delighted.


"So we are making progress."


"We are making observations."


"Excellent."


Item Four


Blottisham unfolded a large diagram.


"I've attempted to identify likely access panels."


Professor Quillibrace stared.


The universe had been drawn as an enormous brass clock.

Several arrows pointed towards labels including:

MAIN SPRING

EMERGENCY BRAKE

COSMIC LUBRICATION PORT

DO NOT REMOVE UNDER PRESSURE


Miss Stray was laughing too hard to speak.


Professor Quillibrace examined the drawing.


"I particularly admire the cup holder."


"I thought it practical."


"For whom?"


"The engineer."


"There isn't one."


"So you've said."


The fire crackled gently.


After a while, Miss Stray became thoughtful.


"I think Mr Blottisham has discovered something rather important."


Professor Quillibrace smiled.


"He often does."


"We call things machines because machines are among the most complicated objects we understand well."


"Yes."


"So they become metaphors for other complicated things."


Professor Quillibrace nodded.


"The metaphor invites us to think about parts."


"Functions."


"Interactions."


"Reliability."


"Causation."


"But eventually..."


"...Mr Blottisham asks where the workshop is."


The room fell quiet.


Professor Quillibrace looked at the wheelbarrow.


"I must admit..."


"...that is exactly where the metaphor resigns."


Blottisham looked pleased.


"So we've found another edge."


"Indeed."


The college clock struck five.


Blottisham began packing away the tools.


"I didn't use the hammer."


"I noticed."


"I was rather hoping."


"I was rather hoping you wouldn't."


As he lifted the wheelbarrow, a small screwdriver rolled onto the floor.

Professor Quillibrace picked it up.

He turned it thoughtfully in his hand.


"You know..."

he said,


"there is something oddly comforting about the machine metaphor."


Miss Stray looked at him.


"In what way?"


"If the universe were a machine..."


"Yes?"


"One always imagines that, somewhere, someone understands how it works."


The room grew unexpectedly quiet.


Blottisham nodded.


"And perhaps that is why we invent the metaphor."


Professor Quillibrace smiled.


"Perhaps."


He handed back the screwdriver.


"But whether or not the universe resembles a machine..."


"...our understanding certainly does."


Miss Stray tilted her head.


"How so?"


"We are forever dismantling ideas..."


"...examining the parts..."


"...and then attempting to put them back together."


Blottisham looked delighted.


"So philosophy is a repair shop."


Professor Quillibrace laughed.


"No."


"What then?"


"It is the place where we discover that the instruction manual was itself only another metaphor."


The wheelbarrow rattled gently down the corridor.

The Senior Common Room returned to its customary tranquillity.

Professor Quillibrace lifted his teacup.

Then paused.


"Miss Stray..."


"Yes?"


"Do you suppose Mr Blottisham already has a plan for quantum fields?"


She smiled.


"I believe..."


"...he was seen this morning purchasing a picnic hamper."


Professor Quillibrace slowly put his teacup down again.


"Oh dear."

The Senior Common Room Plays Quantum Billiards Or: The Smallest Sporting Event in the Universe

Professor Quillibrace had almost finished his morning tea when Mr Blottisham entered carrying a polished wooden case.

Professor Quillibrace looked at it with immediate suspicion.


"What have you brought today?"


"Billiard balls."


Professor Quillibrace slowly put down his teacup.


"I see."


"No, Professor."

Blottisham smiled cheerfully.

"I don't think you do."


Miss Stray entered behind him.

"Oh dear."


"You recognise the expression?"

asked Professor Quillibrace.


"The wooden case."


"Yes."


"It usually means Mr Blottisham has purchased something in the interests of science."


Blottisham opened the case with great satisfaction.

Inside were a dozen brilliantly polished billiard balls.


"There."


Professor Quillibrace sighed.


"I suppose these are electrons."


"No."


"No?"


"They're billiard balls."


Professor Quillibrace looked mildly relieved.


"Oh."


"They're going to become electrons."


The relief disappeared.


Miss Stray quietly poured herself some tea.


"I have found," she remarked,

"that this generally improves the experience."


Blottisham arranged the balls carefully across the billiard table that occupied one corner of the Common Room.

Nobody could remember why the college possessed a billiard table.

Professor Quillibrace suspected it had something to do with the nineteenth century.


"There."

said Blottisham proudly.


"What exactly are we demonstrating?"


"Particle physics."


"With snooker?"


"Billiards."


"My apologies."


Blottisham picked up the cue.


"Physicists used to describe particles as tiny billiard balls."


"They sometimes did."


"So..."

He tapped one gently.


"...they should collide."


"They do."


"They should bounce."


"In certain circumstances."


"They should possess surfaces."


Professor Quillibrace hesitated.


"Well..."


"They should roll."


"No."


"They should spin."


Professor Quillibrace brightened.


"Yes."


Blottisham looked delighted.


"Aha!"


"I knew it!"


"They spin."


"They possess something we call spin."


"So they really are spinning?"


Professor Quillibrace became very still.


"No."


"But..."


"It is called spin."


"Because..."


"It resembles..."


"...not really."


Miss Stray looked sympathetically at Professor Quillibrace.


"It has been one of those mornings."


Blottisham looked down at the billiard balls.


"If electrons are tiny balls..."


"They are not."


"...how smooth are they?"


"They are not smooth."


"How rough?"


"They are not rough."


"Then what are they?"


Professor Quillibrace looked thoughtfully at the ceiling.


"One sometimes wonders whether language has apologised sufficiently."


Miss Stray smiled.


"I suspect it has not."


Blottisham was still examining the balls.


"They must have a surface."


"Not in the ordinary sense."


"An inside?"


"Not in the ordinary sense."


"An outside?"


"No."


"So..."

Blottisham frowned.


"...where do they keep themselves?"


The room became silent.


Professor Quillibrace looked as though he had suddenly developed a deep interest in the fireplace.


Finally Miss Stray spoke.


"I think Mr Blottisham has arrived at the edge of the metaphor."


Professor Quillibrace nodded gratefully.


"The billiard-ball picture works rather well..."


"...until one asks billiard-ball questions."


Blottisham looked genuinely puzzled.


"But surely that is how one tests a metaphor."


Professor Quillibrace stopped.


He considered the question for several moments.


"Actually..."


"...yes."


The discussion continued.


Blottisham struck one ball gently.

It rolled across the table and struck another.


"There."


"Momentum."


"Quite."


"But..."

He looked puzzled again.


"Do electrons make that satisfying clicking noise?"


Professor Quillibrace laughed despite himself.


"No."


"Pity."


"It is."


Miss Stray looked at the moving balls.


"They are excellent for visualising collisions."


Professor Quillibrace nodded.


"Indeed."


"But they also encourage us to imagine tiny hard objects."


"Which eventually becomes misleading."


"Precisely."


Blottisham stopped another ball with his finger.


"I think I understand."


Professor Quillibrace looked hopeful.


"The metaphor opens the door."


"Yes."


"But if one insists on walking further..."


"...one eventually arrives in the billiard room."


Miss Stray laughed.


"A remarkably elegant summary."


The clock struck four.


Blottisham carefully packed away the billiard balls.


"I have one final question."


Professor Quillibrace smiled wearily.


"I thought you might."


"If particles aren't really little balls..."


"No."


"...why did physicists call them particles?"


Professor Quillibrace was silent for a long time.


Finally he answered.


"Because every generation must begin somewhere."


Miss Stray nodded.


"And because every new idea must first borrow an old language."


Professor Quillibrace smiled.


"Until it gradually teaches us why that language was never quite enough."


As Blottisham closed the wooden case, he looked thoughtful.


"So today's experiment has failed."


Professor Quillibrace shook his head.


"No."


"It has done exactly what a good experiment should do."


"It has?"


"It has shown us where the model stops."


Blottisham looked pleased.


"I do enjoy experiments with successful failures."


Miss Stray smiled.


"I suspect science does too."


They left the billiard room together.

The polished balls remained in their velvet-lined case.

Perfectly round.

Wonderfully tangible.

Entirely unsuited to being electrons.

And yet, for one delightful afternoon, they had helped three colleagues discover precisely why physicists had once imagined them that way—and why they eventually had to imagine something else.

The Senior Common Room Investigates the Fabric of Space Or: Where Exactly Are the Seams?

Professor Quillibrace knew something was wrong the moment Mr Blottisham entered carrying a large roll of blue fabric.

Not a notebook.

Not a newspaper.

Fabric.


"Good heavens."

"Good afternoon, Professor."

"What," asked Professor Quillibrace carefully,

"...is that?"


Blottisham looked surprised.

"Spacetime."


A long silence followed.


Miss Stray lowered her book.

"I think," she said quietly,

"...this promises to be an unusually educational afternoon."


Professor Quillibrace removed his spectacles.

"No."


"No?"


"That is not spacetime."


Blottisham looked genuinely puzzled.


"But physicists keep telling us spacetime is a fabric."


"They do."


"So I bought some."


Professor Quillibrace closed his eyes.


"I was afraid," he murmured,

"that someone eventually would."


Miss Stray examined the roll.

"It is rather attractive."


"Thank you."


"What is it?"


"Cotton."


Professor Quillibrace sighed.


"At least it is not polyester."


Blottisham began unrolling the cloth across the Senior Common Room floor.


"What," asked Professor Quillibrace,

"...are you doing?"


"I thought we might investigate gravity."


"With haberdashery?"


"It seemed the obvious place to begin."


The blue fabric now stretched almost from one wall to the other.

Blottisham stood back proudly.


"There."


Professor Quillibrace regarded it.


"It appears to be a blanket."


"It is spacetime."


"It is a blanket."


Miss Stray smiled.


"I suspect it is about to become both."


Blottisham placed a heavy dictionary in the centre.

The fabric sagged.


"There!"

he announced triumphantly.

"Gravity."


Professor Quillibrace nodded.


"A familiar demonstration."


"So spacetime bends."


"In the model."


Blottisham frowned.


"What do you mean, 'in the model'?"


"The blanket is representing something."


"Oh."


A pause.


"So where is the real fabric?"


Professor Quillibrace looked upwards.

Not towards the ceiling.

Towards patience.


"There is no actual fabric."


"But everyone says there is."


"No."


"They say spacetime behaves as though..."


Blottisham interrupted.


"...like fabric."


"Precisely."


Miss Stray leaned forward.


"And now we have reached the interesting part."


Professor Quillibrace nodded.


"What happens when we forget the words 'as though'."


Blottisham looked at the blanket.


"So there are no threads."


"No."


"No weave."


"No stitching."


"No hem."


"No manufacturer."


"No."


Blottisham looked mildly disappointed.


"Then why call it fabric?"


Professor Quillibrace smiled.


"Because metaphors borrow familiar experience."


"They help us imagine unfamiliar ideas."


"But they always leave something behind."


Miss Stray picked up one corner of the blanket.


"What does fabric do well?"


"It bends."


"It stretches."


"It can be distorted."


"Excellent."


"And what does it not do well?"


Blottisham looked thoughtful.


"It has edges."


"Yes."


"It can tear."


"Yes."


"It wrinkles."


"Yes."


"It can be folded."


"Yes."


He looked suddenly alarmed.


"Professor..."


"Yes?"


"If spacetime were really fabric..."


Professor Quillibrace visibly braced himself.


"...who irons it?"


Miss Stray laughed so suddenly that she nearly dropped her teacup.


Professor Quillibrace pinched the bridge of his nose.


"Nobody irons spacetime."


"So it is permanently creased?"


"No."


"But black holes..."

Blottisham continued,

"...surely leave terrible wrinkles."


Professor Quillibrace looked at the ceiling again.


"I find myself wondering..."

he said slowly,

"...whether the history of science has adequately prepared us for this conversation."


Miss Stray smiled.


"I think it has prepared us perfectly."


"Really?"


"Yes."


"Because Mr Blottisham has discovered something."


Professor Quillibrace looked sceptical.


"What?"


"The demonstration works because it resembles fabric."


"Yes."


"But if we continue asking fabric questions..."


"We eventually leave physics..."


"...and enter haberdashery."


Blottisham looked pleased.


"So that tells us where the metaphor ends."


Professor Quillibrace stopped.


A long pause.


"Actually..."

he admitted,

"...it rather does."


The room fell quiet.


Miss Stray walked slowly around the blanket.


"It occurs to me that metaphors are rather like borrowed coats."


Professor Quillibrace smiled.


"Go on."


"They fit well enough for the journey."


"Yes."


"But eventually one notices that the sleeves are too short."


Professor Quillibrace laughed.


"I wish I had said that."


Blottisham was still studying the blanket.


"I have one last question."


Professor Quillibrace looked cautious.


"Only one?"


"If spacetime is curved..."


"Yes?"


"...where exactly is the corner?"


Silence.


Miss Stray looked down into her teacup.


Professor Quillibrace looked out of the window.


Somewhere in the distance, a pigeon landed on the college lawn.

It seemed, for reasons known only to itself, remarkably content.


Finally Professor Quillibrace spoke.


"My dear Blottisham..."


"Yes?"


"I believe..."


"...you have just discovered the precise point at which a useful metaphor resigns."


The three stood looking at the blue blanket stretched across the floor.

It had done exactly what it was supposed to do.

It had helped them imagine curvature.

It had also persuaded them, briefly, to imagine seams, stitching, wrinkles and corners.


The blanket had succeeded.

Then it had failed.

Exactly as every good metaphor eventually must.


As they rolled it up again, Miss Stray smiled.


"I think we have learned something."


"What?"

asked Blottisham.


"A metaphor is rather like your blanket."


"How so?"


"It covers a great deal."


Professor Quillibrace picked up his coat.


"...but one should never mistake it for the furniture."


The blue fabric disappeared into its roll.

The room looked entirely ordinary once more.

Which, everyone silently agreed, was probably for the best.

The Senior Common Room Discusses the Possibility of Seeing Without Metaphors Or: The Final Illusion

The Senior Common Room was unusually quiet.

Not because there was nothing to discuss.

But because, after several weeks of discussing language, everyone had become suspicious of speaking.


Mr Blottisham broke the silence.


"I have decided to stop using metaphors."


Professor Quillibrace looked up from his tea.


"I wish you every success."


"Thank you."


"I expect the attempt will last approximately three minutes."


Miss Stray smiled.


"Why three?"


"Because he has already begun."


Blottisham frowned.


"I haven't."


Professor Quillibrace closed his book.


"You said you had decided."


"Yes."


"As though thoughts were places at which one arrives."


Blottisham blinked.


"Oh."


"And you intend to stop."


"Yes."


"As though conversation were movement."


Another pause.


"Oh."


Miss Stray laughed.


"It appears the experiment is proving educational."


Professor Quillibrace walked slowly to the blackboard.

He wrote:

SEEING WITHOUT METAPHORS


"There."

He stepped back.

"Our ambition."


Blottisham nodded.


"Exactly."


Professor Quillibrace looked at the words.


"What is seeing?"


"A metaphor?"


"Indeed."


"And what is without?"


Blottisham hesitated.


"Another one?"


"We imagine stepping outside something."


"And metaphors?"


Professor Quillibrace smiled.


"We have managed to smuggle three metaphors into the title before the discussion has properly begun."


Miss Stray looked delighted.


"So even the question is metaphorical."


"Precisely."


The room fell silent.


Professor Quillibrace erased the board.

Then wrote a single sentence.


THE DESIRE TO ESCAPE A FRAMEWORK IS ITSELF A FRAMEWORK.


Nobody spoke.


After a while, Blottisham raised a hand.


"That seems unfair."


"In what way?"


"If every attempt to escape metaphors uses metaphors..."


"Yes?"


"...haven't we lost before we started?"


Professor Quillibrace considered.


"No."


"Why not?"


"Because the goal was mistaken."


Miss Stray leaned forward.


"Perhaps we have imagined thought as a room."


"So?"


"We then imagine leaving the room."


"Yes."


"But perhaps thinking is not something that happens inside a room at all."


Professor Quillibrace smiled.


"A remarkably appropriate observation."


Blottisham looked thoughtful.


"So we do not escape metaphors."


"No."


"What do we do?"


"We notice them."


"And then?"


"We compare them."


"And then?"


"We ask what each one makes possible."


Professor Quillibrace nodded.


"Exactly."


The discussion drifted for a while.

The fire settled into a quiet rhythm.

Rain tapped gently against the windows.


Finally Miss Stray spoke.


"I wonder whether we have been thinking about metaphors in the wrong way."


Professor Quillibrace looked interested.


"Go on."


"We have spoken as though metaphors were things."


"Yes."


"But perhaps they are more like invitations."


Blottisham looked puzzled.


"Invitations?"


"They invite us to see one thing in terms of another."


Professor Quillibrace remained silent.


"They do not force us."


"No."


"They suggest."


"They illuminate."


"They organise."


"They make some questions easier to ask."


"And others?"


"They quietly persuade us not to ask."


The room was still.


Professor Quillibrace stood and wrote four words.

Blottisham looked puzzled.


"What does that mean?"


Professor Quillibrace smiled.


"Do you remember the World Cup?"


Miss Stray smiled too.


"And chess."


"And Scrabble."


Blottisham laughed.


"The game where every move opens some possibilities and closes others."


"Exactly."


Professor Quillibrace nodded.


"So does every metaphor."


The room became very quiet.


Miss Stray looked at the blackboard.


"So every metaphor is a move."


Professor Quillibrace slowly put down the chalk.


"I believe..."

he said quietly,

"...that may be the most important thing we have discovered."


Blottisham looked surprised.


"More important than whether a metaphor is true?"


"Much more."


"Why?"


"Because metaphors are not merely descriptions."


"What are they?"


"They are ways of proceeding."


"Ways of thinking."


"Ways of questioning."


"Ways of noticing."


"Ways of overlooking."


Miss Stray looked thoughtfully into her teacup.


"So understanding is less like finding the correct map..."


"And more like learning which map to unfold."


Professor Quillibrace smiled.


"And when to fold it away."


The college clock struck five.


Outside, evening had settled over the quadrangle.

Students walked beneath ancient stone arches.

Some hurried.

Some wandered.

Some argued.

Some laughed.

Each inhabited the same college.

Yet each walked through a different world of meanings.


Blottisham gathered his notebook.


"I think I finally understand."


Professor Quillibrace looked gently sceptical.


"Only finally?"


Blottisham smiled.


"I understand that understanding is never final."


There was a pause.


Professor Quillibrace looked almost disappointed.


"That," he said,

"is regrettably well put."


Miss Stray laughed.


"And what shall we do now?"

she asked.


Professor Quillibrace looked around the room.

At the books.

The portraits.

The centuries of accumulated conversation.


Then he looked at the blackboard.


He erased everything.

Everything except one sentence.


EVERY WAY OF SEEING IS ALSO A WAY OF NOT SEEING.


The three stood in silence.


After a long moment, Blottisham spoke.


"So the task is not to find the perfect metaphor."


"No."


"Nor to escape metaphors."


"No."


"Then what?"


Professor Quillibrace picked up his coat.

He paused at the door.


"The task, my dear Blottisham..."


"...is to remain capable of wondering whether another metaphor might reveal another possibility."


The light was switched off.

The Senior Common Room disappeared into the evening.

The blackboard remained unseen in the darkness.

Its final sentence no longer visible.

Yet somehow still present.
