Why Meaning Is Metafunctional: 4 Textual Pressure: Maintaining Coherence

In the previous posts we explored two fundamental pressures acting on meaning systems.

First, participants must be able to construe experience. They must model events, entities, and relations so that they can talk about the world. This pressure gives rise to the ideational metafunction.

Second, participants must be able to negotiate coordination with one another. They must signal commitment, obligation, attitude, and stance so that interaction can proceed smoothly. This pressure gives rise to the interpersonal metafunction.

Yet even with these two dimensions in place, a serious problem remains.

Meaning does not occur in isolated fragments.

It unfolds through sequences of interaction over time.

A semiotic system must therefore provide resources that allow participants to organise meanings so that discourse remains coherent and interpretable.

This is the third major pressure on meaning systems.


The problem of unfolding meaning

Consider what happens in ordinary interaction.

Participants rarely produce single, self-contained meanings. Instead they produce sequences of utterances that build upon one another. Each contribution must connect in some way to what has come before and prepare the ground for what may follow.

Listeners must constantly determine:

  • what the current message is about

  • how it relates to previous discourse

  • which elements are already known and which are new

  • where attention should be directed next

Without mechanisms for managing these relations, communication would quickly break down.

Even if participants could construe experience and negotiate social relations, discourse would dissolve into disconnected fragments.

Meaning systems must therefore support ways of organising the flow of meaning itself.


The emergence of textual meaning

This pressure gives rise to what systemic functional linguistics calls the textual metafunction.

Textual meaning provides the resources through which participants organise meanings into coherent discourse.

Through these resources, participants can manage:

  • how a message connects to its context

  • how information is distributed within an utterance

  • how attention is guided through a sequence of meanings

  • how discourse maintains continuity across turns

The textual metafunction therefore acts as the organising dimension of semiosis.

It ensures that meanings do not simply accumulate, but unfold in ways that others can follow.


Managing attention

One of the central tasks of textual meaning is the coordination of attention.

At any moment in discourse, participants must decide:

  • what the message will focus on

  • what background assumptions can remain implicit

  • how new information should be introduced

Language provides systematic ways of organising these distinctions.

For example, participants can structure messages so that some elements appear as points of departure, while others carry the main informational weight. These patterns guide listeners in interpreting how the message connects to the surrounding discourse.

Such choices do not primarily affect what is being construed or how participants relate to each other.

Instead they shape how meanings are organised for interpretation.


Creating coherence

Textual meaning also supports the construction of larger patterns of coherence.

Across extended discourse, participants must maintain continuity by linking meanings together through patterns such as:

  • reference to previously mentioned entities

  • repetition or variation of key expressions

  • logical connections between propositions

  • shifts in focus or topic

These mechanisms allow discourse to develop as a structured sequence rather than a random collection of statements.

Through textual resources, meaning systems provide a way of holding discourse together.


Why coherence is unavoidable

Any semiotic system capable of sustained interaction must solve this problem.

If meanings could not be organised coherently, participants would struggle to interpret how one contribution relates to another. Conversations would constantly collapse into confusion.

Meaning systems therefore evolve resources that allow participants to manage the unfolding of discourse.

The textual metafunction emerges as the structural response to this pressure.

It provides the mechanisms through which meaning systems coordinate the temporal organisation of semiosis.


Meaning in three orientations

With the textual metafunction in place, the architecture of meaning becomes clear.

Every act of meaning-making simultaneously involves three orientations:

  • meanings construe aspects of experience

  • meanings negotiate relations between participants

  • meanings organise themselves into coherent discourse

These orientations correspond to the three metafunctions:

  • ideational

  • interpersonal

  • textual

Together they form the minimal architecture required for complex semiotic interaction.


The next question

We have now examined the three pressures acting on meaning systems:

  • modelling experience

  • negotiating coordination

  • maintaining coherence

Each of these pressures generates a corresponding orientation of meaning.

But an important question remains.

Are these three pressures simply common features of human language, or are they structurally necessary for any complex meaning system?

Why Meaning Is Metafunctional: 3 Interpersonal Pressure: Negotiating Coordination

In the previous post we explored the first major pressure acting on meaning systems: the need to model experience.

Participants must be able to construe processes, entities, and relations so that they can talk about events, reason about situations, and coordinate action across time and space. This pressure gives rise to the ideational metafunction, the resources through which experience is semiotically modelled.

But modelling experience alone does not sustain interaction.

Meaning-making is never purely descriptive. It is always relational.

Participants do not simply talk about the world; they talk to one another.

This introduces a second fundamental pressure on meaning systems.

Participants must be able to negotiate coordination with each other.


Meaning as interaction

Every act of meaning-making occurs within a social situation.

Participants bring with them:

  • expectations

  • intentions

  • degrees of knowledge or uncertainty

  • positions of authority or obligation

  • attitudes toward what is being discussed

When one participant produces a meaning, the others must decide how to respond. They may accept it, question it, reject it, or build upon it.

Meaning-making therefore always involves negotiation.

A semiotic system must provide resources that allow participants to manage this negotiation.


The problem of alignment

Coordination between participants requires continuous adjustment.

Participants must be able to signal things such as:

  • whether they are making a statement or asking a question

  • whether they are giving an instruction or making a suggestion

  • whether they are certain or uncertain

  • whether they agree or disagree

  • whether they are requesting action or offering information

Without such signals, interaction would become unstable. Participants would struggle to determine what kind of response is expected.

Meaning systems must therefore support ways of aligning participants in interaction.


The emergence of interpersonal meaning

This pressure gives rise to what systemic functional linguistics calls the interpersonal metafunction.

Interpersonal meaning provides resources through which participants negotiate:

  • roles in interaction

  • degrees of commitment

  • obligations and permissions

  • attitudes and evaluations

Through these resources, participants position themselves in relation to one another while meanings are exchanged.

When someone says:

“Close the door.”

they are not merely describing an action involving a door. They are positioning themselves as someone who can legitimately direct another participant.

When someone says:

“Could you close the door?”

they are negotiating that same action through a different relational stance.

Such differences are interpersonal rather than ideational. The event being construed may be identical, but the relation between participants has changed.


Coordinating stance

Interpersonal meaning therefore operates as a system for coordinating stance.

Participants continually indicate how they stand in relation to:

  • the meanings they produce

  • the participants they address

  • the actions that may follow

They may present meanings as:

  • certain or uncertain

  • authoritative or tentative

  • obligatory or optional

  • desirable or problematic

These signals allow participants to regulate interaction without constantly renegotiating the entire situation from scratch.

Interpersonal meaning provides the semiotic infrastructure for maintaining social coordination.


Why negotiation is unavoidable

Any complex meaning system must support this dimension of coordination.

If participants could only model experience without negotiating relations, interaction would quickly become chaotic. Statements might be interpreted as commands, questions as accusations, or suggestions as obligations.

Participants therefore need ways to signal how meanings should be taken.

The interpersonal metafunction emerges as the structural response to this pressure.

It allows meaning systems to coordinate not just what is being construed, but how participants stand in relation to one another while construal occurs.


Meaning between participants

Seen from this perspective, interpersonal meaning highlights something fundamental about semiosis.

Meaning is never simply located in expressions themselves. It arises through relations between participants.

Every act of meaning-making simultaneously:

  • construes some aspect of experience

  • positions participants in relation to one another

The ideational and interpersonal metafunctions therefore operate together in every instance of language.

Participants are always talking about something while negotiating their relation to each other.


The remaining problem

Even with resources for modelling experience and negotiating relations, a third challenge remains.

Meanings do not occur in isolation. They unfold through sequences of interaction over time.

Participants must manage questions such as:

  • how meanings connect to what has already been said

  • how attention is directed within discourse

  • how information is organised so that others can follow it

  • how interaction maintains coherence across turns

Without mechanisms for organising these flows, discourse would fragment into disconnected pieces.

Meaning systems therefore face a third pressure:

the need to organise meanings as coherent discourse.

Why Meaning Is Metafunctional: 2 Ideational Pressure: Modelling Experience

In the previous post we asked why meaning systems organise themselves metafunctionally.

The proposal was that metafunctions emerge because complex semiotic systems must respond to three fundamental coordination pressures:

  • the need to construe experience

  • the need to coordinate relations between participants

  • the need to organise the flow of discourse

These pressures correspond to the three metafunctions recognised in systemic functional linguistics:

  • ideational

  • interpersonal

  • textual

In this post we begin with the first of these pressures: the need for meaning systems to model experience.


The problem of shared construal

Participants in interaction rarely respond only to what is immediately present. They talk about events, entities, relations, and possibilities that extend across time and space.

They must be able to construe things such as:

  • what is happening

  • who or what is involved

  • how events relate to one another

  • when something occurred

  • where something took place

  • why something happened

Without some way of organising such construals, coordinated interaction would quickly become impossible.

Meaning systems must therefore support shared ways of construing experience.


Experience as relational structure

From a relational perspective, experience is not simply a collection of objects waiting to be named.

What participants encounter are phenomena structured through relations:

events unfolding over time, entities interacting, conditions enabling or constraining processes.

When participants construe experience, they are not merely attaching labels to things. They are organising relational patterns:

  • processes and the participants involved in them

  • relations between entities

  • sequences of events

  • causal or conditional structures

Meaning systems must therefore provide resources for stabilising such relational construals so that they can be shared across participants.


The emergence of ideational meaning

This pressure gives rise to what systemic functional linguistics calls the ideational metafunction.

Ideational meaning provides the resources through which participants can construe:

  • processes

  • participants in those processes

  • circumstances surrounding them

  • logical relations between events

These resources allow participants to construct semiotic models of the phenomena they are discussing.

Importantly, these models are not direct reflections of the world. They are construals, organised through the relational possibilities available within the meaning system.

Ideational meaning therefore does not simply represent reality.

It provides a structured space in which participants can construe experience in shareable ways.


Stabilising relational construal

Once ideational resources emerge, meaning systems gain the capacity to stabilise recurring patterns of experience.

Participants can reliably construe:

  • actions and events

  • entities participating in those events

  • relationships between processes

  • categories of phenomena

These patterns become organised into systems of alternatives.

For example, participants can construe events as:

  • actions

  • perceptions

  • relations

  • states

They can construe entities as:

  • actors

  • goals

  • carriers of attributes

  • experiencers of perception

Such distinctions allow participants to coordinate how they talk about the world.

The ideational metafunction therefore acts as a framework for organising relational construals of experience.


Why modelling experience is unavoidable

Any complex semiotic system must support this capacity.

If participants could not model experience, they could not coordinate action beyond the immediate moment. They could not discuss past events, plan future actions, or reason about causal relations.

Meaning systems therefore face a constant pressure to expand and refine their resources for construing experience.

The ideational metafunction emerges as the structural response to that pressure.


Beyond representation

Seen in this light, ideational meaning is often misunderstood when it is described simply as “representing the world”.

A more accurate description is that ideational meaning provides resources for organising relational construals of phenomena.

Participants do not access reality directly through language. They construct semiotic models of experience that allow them to coordinate interpretation and action.

Ideational meaning therefore operates at the intersection of:

  • relational experience

  • semiotic construal

  • shared meaning potential


The limits of ideational meaning

Yet modelling experience alone is not enough to sustain interaction.

Participants must also coordinate their relations with one another while they construe the world.

They must signal agreement or disagreement, obligation or permission, commitment or uncertainty. They must negotiate roles, expectations, and attitudes.

This pressure introduces a second dimension of meaning.

Why Meaning Is Metafunctional: 1 The Problem of Organising Meaning

Language is often described as a system for expressing meanings.

But once we say this, a deeper question immediately arises.

If a language contains a vast potential for meaning, how is that potential organised?

How can participants navigate such a system without collapsing into confusion?

This question becomes particularly important once we recognise how large meaning potential actually is. Even the simplest natural language allows speakers to construe:

  • events and processes in the world

  • relationships between participants

  • attitudes, judgements, and commitments

  • complex sequences of discourse unfolding across time

In other words, language does not provide a single dimension of meaning. It provides a multidimensional field of possibilities.

A semiotic system capable of supporting such complexity cannot leave those possibilities unstructured.

Meaning must be organised.


The metafunctional insight

One of the most profound insights of systemic functional linguistics is that language organises meaning according to three broad functional orientations:

  • ideational meaning, concerned with construing experience

  • interpersonal meaning, concerned with negotiating relations between participants

  • textual meaning, concerned with organising the flow of discourse

These are known as the metafunctions of language.

Importantly, metafunctions are not separate components of language, nor are they optional features of particular grammatical systems. They operate simultaneously within every act of meaning-making.

Whenever language is used, participants are at the same time:

  • representing aspects of the world

  • positioning themselves socially

  • organising their meanings into coherent discourse

The metafunctions therefore describe the simultaneous orientations of meaning itself.


But why three?

Within systemic functional linguistics, the metafunctions have proven extraordinarily powerful for analysing language.

Yet the theory often begins by presenting them as a descriptive discovery: language appears to organise meaning in these three ways.

But this observation raises a deeper question.

Why should meaning systems organise themselves in precisely this way?

Why should a semiotic system converge on these three orientations rather than some other arrangement?

The question becomes even more pressing when we consider the evolutionary story of meaning.

Across the previous series, we traced how semiotic systems emerge and develop:

  • behavioural coordination in value systems

  • stylised signalling in protosemiotic interaction

  • repertoires of semiotic resources in protolanguage

  • stratified architectures of meaning in language

  • reflexive modelling of meaning systems

By the time stratified language emerges, meaning potential has become vast.

A system capable of producing such an enormous range of meanings must possess mechanisms for organising that potential so that participants can use it reliably.

The metafunctions appear to provide precisely such a mechanism.

But the question remains:

why these three?


The pressures on meaning systems

To answer this question, we must shift perspective.

Instead of asking how linguists classify meanings, we need to ask what pressures any meaning system must face once it becomes sufficiently complex.

When participants use language in interaction, they must simultaneously accomplish several things.

They must be able to:

  1. construe aspects of the world they are talking about

  2. coordinate their relations with one another

  3. organise meanings so that discourse unfolds coherently

These are not optional tasks. Any complex semiotic interaction must handle all three.

If a system could not construe experience, it could not represent events or entities.

If it could not negotiate relations, participants could not coordinate action or stance.

If it could not organise discourse, interaction would disintegrate into incoherent fragments.

Meaning systems therefore evolve under three fundamental coordination pressures.


The architecture of meaning

Seen in this light, the metafunctions begin to look less like descriptive categories and more like structural solutions.

A semiotic system that must simultaneously:

  • model experience

  • coordinate participants

  • organise discourse

will naturally develop distinct orientations of meaning corresponding to these pressures.

The ideational metafunction supports the construal of experience.

The interpersonal metafunction supports the negotiation of relations.

The textual metafunction supports the organisation of meaning in interaction.

Together, they provide the minimal architecture required for complex semiosis.


A different way of seeing metafunctions

This perspective shifts the status of the metafunctions in an important way.

They are not merely properties of human language.

They are the functional architecture that any sufficiently complex meaning system would require.

Language is metafunctional because meaning itself must simultaneously relate to:

  • the world

  • other participants

  • the unfolding of discourse

Metafunctions therefore emerge not from linguistic theory alone, but from the relational structure of semiosis itself.


The next step

From Stratification to Reflexive Semiosis: Epilogue: The Becoming of Possibility

Across this series we have followed a long and improbable trajectory.

From the coordination of behaviour in value systems, through the emergence of protosemiotic resources, to protolanguage, stratified language, and finally reflexive semiosis, we have traced how meaning systems gradually come into being.

At each stage, something new appears:

  • behaviour becomes selectable

  • signals become semiotic resources

  • resources become structured systems

  • systems become stratified architectures

  • architectures become reflexively observable

What begins as coordination eventually becomes meaning.

But beneath this evolutionary story lies a deeper one.

The story is not simply about the emergence of language.

It is about the becoming of possibility itself.


From action to alternatives

In value systems, behaviour is tightly coupled to circumstance. Organisms respond to their environments through patterns shaped by reinforcement and coordination. There is little room for alternatives beyond those embedded in the dynamics of the system.

The emergence of protosemiotic resources changes this.

When behaviour becomes stylised and recognisable as a signal, it can be selected independently of the immediate conditions that originally produced it. A repertoire of alternatives begins to form.

This is the first appearance of semiotic possibility.

A signal no longer merely occurs.
It can be chosen.


The emergence of systems

With protolanguage, these signals accumulate into repertoires that support increasingly flexible expression. Meanings begin to contrast with one another, forming fields of alternatives within which participants select.

But it is only with stratified language that possibility becomes fully structured.

Meaning potential is organised across strata:

  • semantics, where meanings relate to one another as systems of choice

  • lexicogrammar, where those meanings are realised through patterned forms

  • phonology, where forms are materialised for transmission

At this stage, possibility is no longer incidental.

It is systematically organised.

Participants navigate a structured field of semiotic alternatives, selecting meanings appropriate to situations and contexts.


When possibility observes itself

The emergence of reflexive semiosis introduces something unprecedented.

Meaning systems begin to observe and reorganise their own potential.

Participants reflect on:

  • how meanings are constructed

  • how forms realise meanings

  • how categories relate to one another

  • how interpretations can be stabilised or revised

Possibility becomes an object of thought.

The system begins to model its own field of alternatives.

At this point, the evolution of meaning enters a new phase. Semiotic systems are no longer merely expanding their expressive capacity; they are actively reshaping the space of possible meanings.


The horizon of meaning

Seen from this perspective, the evolution of meaning systems is not simply a sequence of innovations in communication.

It is the progressive structuring of possibility.

Each stage introduces new ways in which alternatives can be generated, contrasted, and selected. Each stage expands the horizon within which meaning can emerge.

And with reflexive semiosis, that horizon becomes visible to the system itself.

Participants begin to recognise that meaning is not fixed, but emerges within a dynamic field of relational potential.


The open system of meaning

Meaning systems are therefore never complete.

Each act of meaning-making instantiates one possibility while leaving countless others unrealised. Through interaction, interpretation, and reflexive observation, participants continually reshape the system that makes those possibilities available.

Meaning evolves because the system that generates it remains open.

The history of semiosis is thus the history of an expanding field of possibility, continually actualised and reconfigured through relational interaction.


Returning to the beginning

The story we have followed therefore loops back on itself.

From the earliest coordination of behaviour to the reflexive modelling of meaning systems, the trajectory of semiosis reveals a single underlying movement:

possibility becoming structured, selectable, and ultimately self-aware.

Language did not simply emerge as a tool for describing the world.

It emerged as a system through which participants can navigate, expand, and reshape the space of possible meanings.

The evolution of meaning is therefore not just a story about language.

It is the story of possibility learning to know itself.

From Stratification to Reflexive Semiosis: 4 Why Reflexive Semiosis Appeared: The Evolutionary Pressure to Model Meaning Itself

Across this series we have traced the long emergence of meaning systems:

  • from value systems coordinating behaviour,

  • to protosemiotic resources,

  • to protolanguage,

  • to stratified language,

  • and finally to reflexive semiosis.

At the final stage something remarkable occurs.
A semiotic system begins to model itself.

Participants no longer use language merely to construe the world or coordinate action. They begin to construe the meanings they produce. Language becomes an object of language.

But why should such a capacity emerge at all?

What evolutionary pressure could possibly require a semiotic system to become self-reflective?


The growing instability of complex meaning

Once stratified language emerges, meaning potential expands dramatically.

Participants can produce:

  • complex event structures

  • abstract categories

  • hypothetical scenarios

  • social negotiations across time and space

But this explosion of expressive capacity creates a new problem.

As meaning systems grow, interpretive instability grows with them.

Different participants may:

  • construe the same expression differently

  • interpret categories inconsistently

  • disagree about the relations between meanings

  • misalign expectations in interaction

The richer the meaning potential, the greater the risk of divergence.

At this stage, coordination through ordinary semiotic interaction is no longer sufficient.

The system needs a new mechanism.


The pressure for semiotic stabilisation

To maintain coordination, participants must increasingly do something new:

they must talk about the meanings themselves.

Instead of only saying:

“The animal is dangerous.”

participants begin to say things like:

“When we say dangerous, we mean…”
“That’s not what that word refers to.”
“Let me explain what I meant.”

Meaning becomes an explicit object of negotiation.

This is the birth of meta-semiotic activity.


From negotiation to modelling

Once meta-semiotic activity begins, a deeper transformation follows.

Participants begin to construct models of the semiotic system itself.

They recognise:

  • patterns in how meanings are expressed

  • regularities in how forms realise meanings

  • distinctions between types of meanings

  • conventions governing interpretation

In other words, they begin to observe the architecture of the system.

The semiotic system becomes capable of describing and reorganising its own potential.

This is reflexive semiosis.


Reflexivity as a coordination technology

From an evolutionary perspective, reflexive semiosis solves a critical problem.

Complex meaning systems require mechanisms for:

  • stabilising interpretation

  • transmitting conventions across generations

  • resolving ambiguity

  • maintaining coherence in expanding cultural knowledge

Reflexive semiosis provides exactly this.

By modelling the system itself, participants can:

  • clarify meanings

  • regulate usage

  • teach conventions

  • create explicit categories and theories

Reflexivity therefore acts as a coordination technology for complex semiosis.


The recursive expansion of meaning

Once reflexive semiosis appears, the system enters a new evolutionary regime.

Meaning systems can now:

  • analyse themselves

  • reorganise their own structures

  • invent new symbolic resources

  • develop formal systems of knowledge

This recursive capacity underlies the emergence of:

  • science

  • philosophy

  • mathematics

  • law

  • art

These domains are not simply uses of language. They are systems in which meaning systematically models meaning.


The relational ontology of reflexivity

From a relational-ontological perspective, reflexive semiosis reveals something fundamental about meaning.

Meaning is never an intrinsic property of signals or forms. It exists only within systems of construal.

Reflexivity emerges when those systems become capable of observing and reorganising their own potential.

Participants are no longer merely selecting meanings within a system.

They are co-individuating the system itself.

Meaning becomes not just a medium of coordination, but a field of evolving possibility.


The final threshold

Seen in this light, reflexive semiosis is not an intellectual luxury.

It is the inevitable outcome of sufficiently complex semiotic systems.

As meaning potential expands, the system must eventually develop the capacity to stabilise, regulate, and redesign itself.

The evolutionary trajectory therefore leads naturally to a final threshold:

A semiotic system that can model the evolution of meaning itself.

At that point, the evolution of meaning becomes part of the system’s own meaning potential.

And the story of semiosis turns inward.

From Stratification to Reflexive Semiosis: 3 The Recursive Architecture of Meaning

In Part 2, we saw how stratified language allows semiotic self-observation, giving participants the capacity to monitor, manipulate, and stabilise the strata of meaning. Through meta-semiotic feedback loops, conventions, categories, and cultural knowledge emerge.

The final stage is the establishment of recursive architecture, in which meaning systems can model themselves, produce abstract thought, and generate meta-semiotic structures.


Recursion as a semiotic principle

Reflexive semiosis is fundamentally recursive:

  • Each semiotic act can be interpreted in light of prior acts.

  • Meanings can be reflected upon, contrasted, or abstracted from prior meaning instances.

  • The system’s potential evolves in response to its own instantiations.

This recursion allows the semiotic system to internalise its own rules and constraints, producing predictable structures while simultaneously expanding its expressive and conceptual scope.


Abstraction and theorisation

With recursive semiotic capacity, participants can construct abstract models of meaning:

  • Categories and relations are generalised across contexts.

  • Social norms, conceptual frameworks, and shared knowledge are formalised in language.

  • Reflection on meaning itself becomes possible, giving rise to theory, symbolic thought, and cultural meta-knowledge.

The system no longer only represents the world or immediate interaction; it represents the structure of representation itself.


Meta-semiotic systems

At this stage, fully recursive meaning systems emerge:

  • Participants can model both actualised and potential meanings, anticipating consequences of semiotic choice.

  • Symbolic conventions are stabilised, transmitted, and manipulated across generations.

  • The system supports self-conscious, deliberate semiotic innovation, enabling science, philosophy, art, and culture.

Reflexive semiosis produces meta-semiotic infrastructure: the very ability of humans to generate and navigate symbolic systems at multiple levels of abstraction.

  2. Protosemiosis → Protolanguage: sequences, combinatorial play, and holistic unstratified meaning.

  3. Protolanguage → Stratified Language: differentiation of form and meaning; semantics, lexicogrammar, phonology.

  4. Stratified Language → Reflexive Semiosis: meta-semiotic observation, recursion, abstraction, and symbolic self-awareness.

From orientation in the world to self-aware semiotic systems, this trajectory captures the ontogeny of meaning as a relational phenomenon, fully aligned with Hallidayan stratification and relational ontology.

From Stratification to Reflexive Semiosis: 2 Semiotic Self-Observation

In Part 1, we saw how stratified language gives rise to reflexive potential: participants can construe not only the world but also the meanings they produce. Meaning begins to operate recursively, allowing sequences to be reflected upon, clarified, and refined.

The next stage is the emergence of semiotic self-observation: the capacity for participants to monitor, manipulate, and stabilise the strata of language itself.


Monitoring the strata

Reflexive semiosis enables participants to track patterns across the Hallidayan strata:

  • Semantic stratum: identifying recurring concepts, relations, and distinctions

  • Lexicogrammatical stratum: observing how patterns of form realise meanings

  • Phonological/gestural stratum: attending to the material realisation of sequences

By attending to these strata, participants can detect misalignments, ambiguities, or inefficiencies, and adjust accordingly. This is the first instance of meta-semiotic regulation, where meaning itself becomes an object of semiotic attention.


Feedback loops and convention

Self-observation generates semiotic feedback loops:

  1. A participant produces a sequence.

  2. Others interpret, negotiate, or correct it.

  3. Adjustments stabilise shared meanings and signal realisation patterns.

  4. These adjustments influence future selections at all strata.

Through repeated interactions, conventions and categories begin to emerge: stable ways of representing entities, relations, and social roles. The system’s potential expands, and participants increasingly coordinate on shared semiotic norms.


Abstract categories and cultural knowledge

As semiotic feedback loops stabilise, reflexive semiosis supports the emergence of abstract categories:

  • Concepts that can be applied across contexts

  • Generalised relational patterns

  • Meta-level classifications of social, temporal, and causal relations

These categories allow participants to construct and transmit knowledge, forming the foundation of culture. The system no longer merely coordinates behaviour or construes events—it becomes capable of knowledge production and symbolic thought.


Self-reinforcing semiotic dynamics

Reflexive semiosis is recursive:

  • Each act of observation modifies the system’s potential.

  • Changes in potential influence subsequent selection and interpretation.

  • The system co-evolves with the participants’ understanding of it.

This dynamic produces a self-reinforcing architecture of meaning, capable of generating ever more complex and abstract semiotic structures.

From a relational-ontology perspective:

  • Reflexive semiosis transforms language from a tool for coordination into a system for co-individuating meaning itself.

  • Participants are not merely enacting meanings—they are co-creating the field of potential meanings, stabilising conventions, and generating culture.

  • Semiotic self-observation is the engine of meta-semiotic development, enabling human cognition to model, analyse, and expand its own symbolic resources.

From Stratification to Reflexive Semiosis: 1 Reflexive Potential Emerges

By the end of the previous series, language had achieved full stratification: the Hallidayan architecture of semantics, lexicogrammar, and phonology allowed participants to convey meaning systematically, reliably, and productively. Signals could be recombined, abstracted, and interpreted across contexts, forming a robust semiotic infrastructure.

The next evolutionary leap is subtle but profound: stratified language begins to support reflexive semiosis—the capacity to construe the meanings of meanings.


Language turning on itself

Stratification enables meaning to exist independently of form, realised through patterned lexicogrammar and phonology. Once meaning is separable from form, participants can:

  • Observe and analyse the meanings they produce

  • Reflect on patterns in their own semiotic activity

  • Select and manipulate meanings as objects of further construal

In other words, language begins to operate on itself. Meaning is no longer only about the world; it can now be about other meanings, creating the conditions for meta-semiotic thought.


Early meta-semantic acts

Reflexive potential first appears in interaction as rudimentary meta-semantic acts:

  • Correcting or clarifying a previous signal

  • Re-expressing the same idea in a new form

  • Negotiating interpretations of ambiguous sequences

These acts indicate that participants are treating sequences not only as instruments of coordination but also as objects of analysis. The semiotic system now supports recursive attention, where construal itself becomes part of the interaction.


Meaning operating recursively

With these capabilities, stratified language enables recursive selection:

  1. Semantic potential guides lexicogrammar selection.

  2. Lexicogrammar realises semantic potential through form.

  3. Participants reflect on the realised meaning, adjusting semantic expectations and lexicogrammatical choices.

  4. Future interactions are shaped by this reflection, generating self-modifying semiotic dynamics.

Reflexive semiosis is thus both practical and theoretical: it coordinates immediate interaction while simultaneously establishing patterns for future semiotic development.


The ontological significance

From a relational-ontology perspective, reflexive semiosis is remarkable:

  • Meaning is no longer merely a relational event between participants and the world.

  • The system now models itself, creating second-order phenomena: meta-meanings, conventions, norms.
