II. Participation: XII. When Does a System Exist?

Modern thought is full of systems.

We inhabit ecosystems.

Our bodies contain nervous systems and immune systems.

Scientists develop theoretical systems.

Engineers construct operating systems.

Economists analyse financial systems.

The word appears everywhere.

Its familiarity makes it almost invisible.

Yet a simple question remains surprisingly difficult to answer.

What is a system?


The obvious answer is that a system consists of many parts working together.

There is much truth in this.

A heart does not constitute a circulatory system.

A single word is not a language.

One musician is not an orchestra.

Systems appear wherever many components become organised.

But this answer raises another question.

What kind of organisation transforms a collection into a system?


Imagine a pile of bricks.

The bricks certainly form a collection.

They occupy the same place.

They may even resemble one another.

Yet we hesitate to call them a system.

Now imagine the same bricks assembled into an arch.

Nothing has been added.

The bricks remain the same.

What has changed is the organisation of their participation.

Each brick now contributes to the stability of every other.

Remove one, and the organisation itself begins to change.

The system has emerged.

Not because new objects appeared.

But because participation became organised.


The same principle appears throughout biology.

A collection of cells is not necessarily an organism.

Cells become an organism when their activities begin sustaining one another across many different processes and timescales.

Nutrition supports metabolism.

Metabolism supports repair.

Repair supports continued metabolism.

The organisation continually contributes to its own continuation.

Participation has become self-sustaining.


Conversations exhibit a similar character.

Two strangers exchanging directions on a street corner participate briefly.

The interaction soon dissolves.

By contrast, a long friendship develops patterns that sustain future conversations.

Shared memories.

Private humour.

Mutual expectations.

The relationship itself becomes increasingly organised.

The conversation no longer depends entirely upon the immediate exchange.

It has acquired a history capable of participating in its own continuation.


Scientific disciplines evolve in much the same way.

At first, isolated investigators pursue related questions.

Gradually, methods become shared.

Standards emerge.

Concepts stabilise.

Students are trained.

Journals appear.

Communities develop.

Eventually we speak naturally of physics or linguistics as though they were unified systems.

Yet nothing mysterious has entered the world.

Participation has simply become sufficiently organised to sustain itself across generations.


This observation suggests that systems possess a distinctive characteristic.

They participate in maintaining the very conditions that make their own participation possible.

An ecosystem continually reshapes the environment within which its organisms survive.

A language continually recreates the conditions under which new speakers acquire it.

A culture continually reproduces the practices through which it persists.

The system is not merely organised.

It participates in preserving its own organisation.


Notice what follows.

Systems are never completely closed.

Every living system exchanges matter, energy and information with wider environments.

Every language borrows expressions.

Every scientific discipline learns from others.

Complete isolation is not the mark of a system.

Indeed, it is often the beginning of a system's decline.

Systems remain themselves precisely because they continue participating in larger organisations.


This also explains why systems admit of degrees.

Some organisations possess only fragile coherence.

Others exhibit remarkable resilience.

A puddle briefly forms organised currents.

A rainforest maintains astonishing complexity across centuries.

The distinction is not categorical.

It is developmental.

Systems mature.

They reorganise.

Sometimes they fragment.

Sometimes they disappear altogether.


Perhaps this changes how we think about boundaries.

We often imagine a system as something enclosed by a clear border.

Reality is usually less obliging.

The boundaries of ecosystems shift.

Languages blend.

Cultures overlap.

Even organisms continually exchange materials with their surroundings.

The boundary does not isolate the system.

It regulates participation.

A boundary is not a wall.

It is an organisation of relationships.


This perspective may become especially important when we return to questions about artificial intelligence.

People often ask whether an AI system is truly autonomous.

The question usually assumes that autonomy depends upon independence.

Our exploration points elsewhere.

Perhaps the more revealing question is,

What forms of organised participation does the system continually sustain?

Autonomy may prove less a matter of isolation than of coherent self-organisation within continuing participation.


Looking back over the previous essays, a pattern has quietly emerged.

Participation became organisation.

Organisation became history.

History enabled inheritance.

Inheritance supported memory.

Memory enriched individuality.

Individuality expressed agency.

Agency reorganised patterns.

Patterns participated in further organisation.

Now we see that systems are not exceptions to these principles.

They are among their richest expressions.


Perhaps we have therefore been looking for systems in the wrong place.

A system is not simply a collection of things.

Nor is it an invisible essence hovering above its components.

A system is an organised history of participations that has become sufficiently coherent to contribute to its own continuing organisation.

Its identity lies neither in its parts nor beyond them.

It lies in the organisation through which they continually become one another's conditions of possibility.

The world is not built from isolated systems.

It is woven from systems participating within systems, each inheriting histories, creating futures and reorganising the possibilities of every larger whole in which it participates.

A system, then, is not what organisation produces once and for all.

It is organisation continually learning how to organise itself.
