Perhaps conscious activity involves an organism continually organising its own organisation.
The thought is appealing.
It explains why consciousness appears dynamic rather than static.
It explains why experience changes from moment to moment.
It explains why perception is never simply passive.
But another question immediately presents itself.
Is recursion enough?
The word recursion has become surprisingly fashionable.
It appears in mathematics.
Computer science.
Linguistics.
Neuroscience.
Artificial intelligence.
Even philosophy.
Yet the word is often used as though its meaning were obvious.
It is not.
At its simplest, recursion means that the output of a process becomes part of the input for further processing.
A process turns back upon itself.
The result influences what happens next.
In that sense, recursion is everywhere.
A thermostat adjusts its behaviour according to previous measurements.
An ecosystem changes the conditions under which future evolution occurs.
A conversation continually reshapes itself through each new exchange.
Recursion alone cannot explain consciousness.
The interesting question is not whether a system is recursive.
It is what kind of recursion it sustains.
There is a profound difference between a process that merely repeats itself and one that continually reorganises itself.
Imagine two rivers.
One follows exactly the same course every day.
The other gradually changes its own banks, creating new currents, new channels and new possibilities for future flow.
Both are recursive in a broad sense.
Only one is continually transforming the conditions of its own activity.
Living organisms appear much closer to the second picture.
Every experience slightly alters the organisation through which subsequent experiences will be interpreted.
The organism is not merely accumulating information.
It is continually changing the significance of information.
Learning is not simply adding new knowledge.
It is reorganising the way future knowledge will be understood.
This suggests something important.
Perhaps recursion becomes relevant to consciousness only when it is sufficiently rich to alter the organisation that gives rise to further experience.
The system does not merely monitor itself.
It continually reshapes the very processes through which monitoring occurs.
Its own activity becomes part of its ongoing development.
Notice how naturally this appears in everyday life.
A child learns to read.
At first, every word requires effort.
Gradually, reading becomes fluent.
Yet something deeper has happened.
The child has not merely acquired more words.
The activity of reading has reorganised itself.
Future reading is no longer the same activity it once was.
The process has transformed its own possibilities.
The same is true of perception.
What an experienced musician hears in a symphony differs profoundly from what a beginner hears.
Not because different sounds enter the ears.
But because years of listening have reorganised the activity of listening itself.
Experience has become part of the organisation through which new experience is interpreted.
The recursion has become developmental.
This distinction may prove crucial.
When we say that a system "models itself," we can mean many different things.
A calculator can report the state of its memory.
A thermostat can register the current temperature.
These are perfectly respectable forms of self-reference.
But they remain comparatively local.
Conscious activity appears to involve something more expansive.
The organisation of the system continually becomes material for further organisation.
The system is not merely observing itself.
It is continually becoming a different version of itself through that observation.
Perhaps this is why consciousness feels inseparable from history.
Every conscious moment carries traces of countless earlier moments.
Memory is not simply stored.
It is continually reinterpreted.
Expectation is not merely predicted.
It is continually revised.
Identity is not simply preserved.
It is continually reconstructed.
The present is always participating in the reorganisation of the future.
This way of thinking suggests an intriguing possibility.
Perhaps consciousness is less like a mirror reflecting the world than like a conversation that continually reshapes itself.
Each contribution changes the context within which the next contribution will be understood.
Nothing stands still.
Meaning is always being renegotiated.
The activity is recursive.
But more importantly, it is historically recursive.
Its own past continually participates in the creation of its future.
If this picture is even partly correct, it has consequences far beyond biology.
The question is no longer whether another system can monitor itself.
Many systems can.
Nor is it whether another system can modify its behaviour.
Many systems do.
The deeper question becomes whether a system can continually reorganise the very organisation through which its future activity becomes possible.
That is a much more demanding idea.
It may also prove to be a much more illuminating one.
We have not yet answered whether such organisation is sufficient for conscious activity.
Perhaps it is not.
Perhaps something more is required.
But we have begun to clarify the landscape.
Recursion is not a magical ingredient.
It is a family of organisational possibilities.
Some are simple.
Some are astonishingly rich.
Understanding that difference may prove far more important than deciding whether a particular system is or is not conscious.
For before we ask whether consciousness has appeared, we should first understand the many ways in which a system can come to participate in its own ongoing organisation.
