And yet, they are never fully given.


The Illusion of Continuity

Lineages are stabilised through naming, categorisation, and abstraction.

  • species lineages are delineated by convention

  • genealogies trace ancestry selectively

  • developmental histories are reconstructed retrospectively

Each of these operations imposes identity where, ontologically, it is fragile.

The continuity we read in lineages is rarely a property of the material itself.
It is a consequence of our cuts.


Where Tensions Emerge

The intolerance of lineage manifests in the discomfort with:

  • identity across generations (non-identity)

  • novelty (genuine emergence)

  • distributed selection (no single unit bears the full story)

  • relational fitness (dependent, context-specific)

Lineage insists on persistence. Evolution insists on becoming.
The clash is structural.


The Usual Repairs

Science attempts to stabilise lineages in several ways:

  • designating species or clades as units of inheritance

  • privileging gene-centred or organism-centred continuity

  • retrofitting ancestral traits to impose coherence

  • smoothing apparent discontinuities through narrative

Each strategy protects intelligibility. Each obscures the relational nature of becoming.


Lineage as Cut, Not Thing

From a relational perspective, lineages are not entities.

They are patterns of constraint that persist long enough to be named and studied.

Persistence is not absolute.
It is selective.
It depends on context, interaction, and the particular cuts made in the field of possibility.

Lineages do not exist independently of description.
They are enacted.


The Price of Refusal

The intolerance of lineage drives persistent explanatory habits:

  • overemphasis on species, genes, or groups

  • attempts to “trace back” novelty as though it were latent

  • teleological narratives of adaptation or optimisation

  • retrospective projection of order onto historical processes

These strategies are intelligible. But they conceal what evolution itself teaches: persistence is relational, provisional, and constrained.


Lineages as Participation

Relational ontology reframes lineage not as a substance that endures, but as a participation in a field of constrained possibility.

The “story” of a lineage is not a mirror of reality.
It is a cut, a perspective, a partial actualisation among many.

Persistence is not given.
It is exercised.


Where the Evolutionary Series Arrives

Through variation, fitness, units, novelty, and now lineage, the intolerances of evolutionary thought converge.

Each intolerance reflects an attempt to impose stability where the relational field is constitutive:

  • perspective resists neutrality

  • incompleteness resists closure

  • non-identity resists preservation

  • plurality resists singular explanation

  • lineage resists projection of enduring essence

The evolutionary series does not resolve these tensions.
It allows them to be seen, together.


Evolution as Field of Constrained Possibility

The final move is relational.

Evolution is not a story of optimisation, nor a catalogue of persistent entities, nor a linear march of adaptation.

It is a field of constrained possibilities, in which:

  • variation actualises within limits

  • fitness operates relationally

  • units are provisional

  • novelty emerges

  • lineages are patterns of sustained constraint

Understanding evolution is not about locating a final explanation.
It is about seeing the cuts, the constraints, and the selective actualisations that make the living world intelligible.

Evolution Without Essence: 4 The Intolerance of Novelty

Evolutionary theory explains much, but it struggles when the genuinely new appears.

Novelty — the emergence of traits, behaviours, or interactions that are not predictable from prior states — is tolerated only as a recombination of what already exists.

It is rarely accepted as ontologically emergent.


The Familiar Turn

Scientific explanations of novelty often rely on familiar mechanisms:

  • mutation as random recombination

  • recombination as reshuffling of existing elements

  • exaptation as repurposing of prior traits

  • selection as pruning of pre-existing variation

In each case, novelty is tamed: it is something derivative, something traceable, something manageable.

The radical potential of truly new forms is bracketed.


Why Novelty Is Uncomfortable

Novelty threatens two deep commitments:

  1. Predictive continuity — the expectation that outcomes can, in principle, be anticipated given sufficient information.

  2. Ontological stability — the expectation that the entities in play are sufficiently persistent and well-defined to carry explanatory weight.

Emergent traits resist both. They cannot be reduced to prior states without leaving residue. They cannot be assigned to fully stable entities without distortion.


The Usual Repairs

When novelty appears, evolutionary thought often attempts to restore tolerability:

  • reframing novelty as recombination or mutation

  • postulating latent potentials in genes or environments

  • invoking selection as retroactive explanation

  • constructing adaptive narratives that smooth discontinuities

These repairs are technically elegant and empirically useful — but they are compensatory. They preserve intelligibility at the cost of acknowledging true emergence.


Novelty as Relational

From a relational perspective, novelty is a natural condition of becoming.

New traits, behaviours, or forms do not emerge from nothing, but neither do they reduce entirely to what came before. They are actualisations of possibilities within a constrained field.

Novelty does not require a creator or blueprint.
It requires only a relational cut — the articulation of difference under constraint.


Emergence Without Teleology

Novelty is frequently misread as optimisation: better forms, fitter traits, more complex structures.

This is a temptation born of intolerance.

Genuine novelty is not necessarily advantageous. It is not inherently adaptive. Its significance arises only in relation to the system in which it manifests — in context, in interaction, in selective pruning.

Emergence does not mean improvement.
It means differentiation.


The Cost of Refusal

By refusing novelty its ontological independence, evolutionary theory repeatedly:

  • reduces emergence to combination

  • recasts the new as recombination of the old

  • retrofits explanation to outcomes

  • obscures the relational dynamics that produce difference

In doing so, it preserves the comfort of continuity at the cost of clarity about becoming.


Relational Response

A relational stance does not deny explanation.

It acknowledges that novelty is constitutive, not exceptional; that the field of evolution is not fully predictable; that selection acts on possibilities, not fixed entities; and that what emerges is situated, not prefigured.

Novelty is not a failure of evolutionary theory.
It is its condition of possibility.


Looking Ahead

With novelty acknowledged, the stage is set for the final evolutionary pressure point: The Intolerance of Lineage.

If units are provisional, fitness is relational, and novelty is emergent, then what persists? How does evolution trace patterns without imposing identity where there is none?

Evolution Without Essence: 3 The Intolerance of the Unit

Few debates in evolutionary biology have been as persistent — or as unproductive — as the question of the unit of selection.

Is selection acting on genes, organisms, groups, species, or lineages?

Decades of argument have not resolved the issue. This is usually treated as a sign of conceptual difficulty or empirical complexity.

It is neither.


The Expectation of a Unit

The question presupposes that selection must act on something — a stable entity that persists long enough to be selected, compared, and explained.

This expectation is inherited from a deeper habit: explanation requires a bearer.

If selection explains differential persistence, then something must persist.

And so the search begins.


The Usual Candidates

Each proposed unit offers clarity — and demands a cost.

  • Genes promise discreteness and inheritance, but abstract away development, environment, and phenotype.

  • Organisms preserve intuitive identity, but fracture under symbiosis, microbiomes, and life cycles.

  • Groups capture collective effects, but struggle to define boundaries and reproduction.

  • Species offer historical continuity, but lack clear mechanisms of selection.

  • Lineages capture persistence, but dissolve into trajectories rather than things.

Each candidate works — until it doesn’t.


Why the Debate Never Ends

The persistence of the debate is often attributed to insufficient data or conceptual confusion.

But the pattern is telling.

Each proposed unit stabilises selection at a particular scale — and thereby suppresses relations at others.

The debate cannot resolve because the demand for a unit is itself misplaced.


Selection Without a Bearer

Darwin did not require a unit of selection. He required only differential persistence within a population of varying entities.

Later evolutionary theory demanded more.

It sought a stable bearer to anchor explanation — something that could carry fitness, be acted upon, and persist across time.

This demand reflects an intolerance.


The Intolerance of Distributed Persistence

Selection operates across relations.

It does not act on isolated units, but on patterns of interaction that cut across levels: genetic, developmental, ecological, and historical.

Persistence is distributed.

There is no single locus where selection “happens”.

This is deeply unsettling.


Relational Units

From a relational stance, a “unit” is not a thing but a cut.

What counts as a unit depends on:

  • the timescale of analysis

  • the relations foregrounded

  • the constraints of interest

  • the explanatory purpose

Units are not discovered.
They are enacted.

This does not make them arbitrary. It makes them accountable.


Why Gene-Centrism Persists

Gene-centred views persist not because they are more true, but because they offer maximal stability with minimal relational cost.

Genes are discrete, replicable, and abstractable.

They function as ontological anchors in a field that resists anchoring.

This is explanatory convenience, not metaphysical privilege.


Units and Identity Revisited

The unit problem is the evolutionary form of the intolerance of non-identity.

If entities do not preserve strict identity across time, then no single unit can be maintained without distortion.

Selection does not track things.
It tracks differences that matter.


What Is Being Protected

The insistence on a unit protects the idea that evolution can be explained by reference to stable entities rather than evolving relations.

It preserves the fantasy that explanation can be localised.

But evolution is not local.

It is distributed across histories, environments, and constraints.


Units as Tools, Not Foundations

This does not mean that talk of genes, organisms, or groups should be abandoned.

It means they should be treated as tools rather than foundations.

Each unit cuts the evolutionary field differently. Each reveals something and obscures something else.

No unit deserves ontological primacy.


The Consequences of Refusal

When the intolerance of the unit dominates, evolutionary explanation becomes distorted:

  • debates are framed as zero-sum

  • explanatory levels are treated as competitors

  • relational effects are reduced or ignored

  • ontological commitments masquerade as empirical claims

The question “which unit is correct?” becomes a substitute for the harder question of perspective.


Selection as Cut

Selection is not something that acts on units.

It is the differential actualisation of possibilities across a constrained field.

Units are how we render that field tractable.

They are not what the field consists of.


Looking Ahead
