Across the previous posts, hallucination has been reframed repeatedly: not as a bizarre failure, but as a structural feature of generative meaning systems. We have seen that large language models do not retrieve facts; they generate coherent textual instances from a probabilistic meaning potential. We have seen that hallucination can be understood as misalignment along the cline of instantiation, as a breakdown in stratification between semantics and context, and as a relational misfit in the stabilisation of meaning.
At this point, a natural question arises: if we understand the mechanism so clearly, can we not simply eliminate the problem?
The short answer is no.
Hallucinations will not disappear — because they are not accidental defects. They are the inevitable consequence of how generative language systems are designed to function.
To see why, consider what such systems are optimised to do. They are trained to predict the most probable continuation of text given a prompt. This means they are fundamentally oriented toward:

maintaining coherence,

preserving grammatical structure,

and selecting high-probability semantic trajectories.
These properties are not incidental. They are the core of the system’s architecture.
Now consider what would be required to eliminate hallucinations entirely. The system would need to refuse to generate text whenever uncertainty exceeds some threshold. It would need to distinguish, with perfect reliability, between:

situations where it has sufficient contextual grounding to respond, and
-
situations where it does not.
But here we encounter a structural tension. Generative systems are built to produce instances from a meaning potential. Their function is not to withhold meaning, but to actualise it. To suppress hallucination entirely would require the system to stop generating whenever its internal probability distributions lack certainty — which would dramatically reduce its usefulness as a conversational system.
In other words, eliminating hallucination would undermine the very generativity that makes these systems valuable.
From a semiotic perspective, this is unsurprising. Meaning systems are inherently open-ended. They operate over a space of possibilities, not a closed list of verified propositions. When a prompt introduces ambiguity, novelty, or insufficient context, the system must still move from potential to instance. It cannot remain indefinitely at the level of abstraction. It must select.
And selection, in a probabilistic system, always carries the possibility of misalignment.
This is why hallucination is structurally inevitable.
Consider again the example of “Wuthering Heist.” If the phrase is not grounded by sufficient contextual cues, the model must still interpret it. It may therefore gravitate toward the high-probability cultural attractor of Wuthering Heights rather than correctly identifying the episode of Inside No. 9. The system has done exactly what it was trained to do: produce the most coherent continuation available within its meaning potential.
The hallucination is not an aberration. It is what happens when probabilistic coherence operates without strong enough contextual anchoring.
This does not mean hallucinations cannot be reduced. Better prompting practices, retrieval-augmented systems, verification layers, and domain-specific constraints can significantly improve alignment. Systems can be designed to defer to external databases when available. They can be engineered to express uncertainty more explicitly. They can be integrated into architectures that prioritise grounding.
But none of these strategies remove the underlying structural fact: a generative system designed to produce coherent meaning from probability will, under some conditions, generate instances that are internally coherent yet externally misaligned.
The deeper insight is that hallucination is not unique to AI. It is a general property of meaning-making under uncertainty. Whenever interpretation exceeds available grounding, systems of meaning must complete patterns. Humans do this constantly. We infer intentions, fill gaps in narratives, resolve ambiguities, and sometimes get it wrong. The difference is that human communicative environments are rich in feedback, correction, and shared situational embedding. Generative AI often operates in comparatively thin contexts, where immediate repair is limited.
What AI does is not introduce hallucination into language. It makes visible the probabilistic and constructive nature of meaning itself.
From the perspective developed in this series, hallucination is therefore best understood as:

a consequence of operating within a probabilistic meaning potential,

a misalignment along the cline of instantiation,
-
a stratificational mismatch between semantics and context, and
-
a relational misfit in the stabilisation of construal.
Because generative systems are designed to preserve coherence and to select high-probability trajectories, they will always retain the capacity for such misalignments.
The goal, then, is not to eliminate hallucination altogether. That goal misunderstands the nature of the system. The more realistic and productive aim is to design architectures and interaction patterns that:

improve contextual grounding,

make uncertainty visible,

enable rapid correction, and
-
align generated meaning more reliably with situational intent.
Hallucination will never disappear completely — but it can be understood, managed, and contextualised.
And perhaps that is the more important achievement. Once we recognise hallucination as a structural feature of generative meaning systems, we can stop treating it as a mysterious anomaly and start treating it as a predictable outcome of probabilistic construal.
In that sense, hallucination is not the failure of AI.
It is a reminder that meaning — whether human or artificial — always involves selection within possibility.
